H2O Man, my 18 inch scout is by far my favorite. It started out matte olive, but the pain gets shiny when oiled. The ultimak rail is perfection, and I can still see the iron sights through the bottom of the Aimpoint using a low Aimpoint mount.

I got rid of the cheek rest and filled in the holes in the stock. It's a nice light combination, and still manages about 2-2.5 MOA which is good enough for my purposes.

Nothing wrong with DSAs, but why pay half again as much for a rifle that does the same thing and is harder to put optics on?

The FAL has a rock solid scope mount that's one of the best next to a flat-top AR-10.

The Rader trigger is very nice, but one should also consider the M14/M21A5 C-IED 4.5 lb MAX-PAK Trigger Upgrade from Smith Enterprise, Inc.
The SEI trigger is legal for service rifle matches.

Here's the Rader trigger, showing the modifications to the standard M14 trigger group.

Excellent!

I have acquired two UltiMAK M8 rails and have them set aside for a pair of unmolested Poly Tech M14s.
I'll have USGI bolts installed, get myself a pair of Aimpoint optics, install SEI Vortex flash hiders that use
the castle nut and drop them into USGI synthetic stocks.

Just what is it you do that allows you to play with such expensive toys? I'm Jealous.

gundog94: What does the serial number of your PTR start with? I'm curious to see if it starts with AW which is supposedly what all the lemons start with. However, I don't know for sure that all AWs are lemons.

My friend also has a PTR that's still NIB. He's trying to figure out if it's worth the risk of trying it out and lowering the resale value. After seeing my rifle firsthand and then reading about the problems people are having over various forums, he's not sure he wants to risk it.

I had a Williams trigger job done. It makes the trigger better. But it's no Rader. I've also done many an FAL trigger job myself.

It's interesting to note that the Jard trigger is very close to the Match trigger designed by FN and shown the the FAL book. The system used in the stock rifle is very hard to work on as there are some many interrelated parts and you can't work on them independently.

Here's one of my trigger, fitted with an overtravel screw. You can't see the modified sear, trigger take up screw and modified safety. I also installed different springs. Resulting trigger was about 4 pounds with little takeup and no overtravel.

I worked on FALs for years before I bought my first M1A.

H2O man, another option is using a Fastfire or similar small dot optic on the rail. You can actually get a coincident dot! I'd like to try it with the protected mount.

Get into FAL ownership with your eyes open to the pitfalls. The DSA scope mount is a solid piece but it is really a huge chunk of aluminum on top of your rifle. Took mine off after a bit just because it looked so awkward and was so big. As noted the trigger isn't all that great without spending some additional $. Mine was also very finicky out of the box (factory built DSA), the ejector was bent. The ejector is one of the most difficult parts to fix if there is a problem so it went back to DSA. They fixed it but it was a hassle and now I'm always wondering if the ejector will have more problems.
