[Not a reloading question - but not sure where else to ask this..........]

I've got some .25 ACP ammo that I need to destroy. My dad must have had a gun for it years ago - but doesn't any more. I checked with my local club and didn't get anyone to take it.

I've heard soaking ammo in oil will destroy it. True? Any recommendations on how to safely and ecologically get rid of this stuff? (Oh - I check with the local police and sheriff and they won't take it.)

Thanks.

killing old ammo

I don't know about oil, but I do know that soaking it in WD-40 will do the job from experience. Have you pulled the bullets?

dump it in a lake/ocean/river if it can't be found its not its not dangerious the water will take care of it in short time

Most ranges have a squib bucket- Ask your range officer where to dispose of it. Also many communities have a hazmat amnesty annually for accepting old motor oil, batteries, pool and lawn chemicals, CRT monitors, etc. and this is also good for ammo. You might also contact a local gun shop .

If all else fails, just dig a hole and dump the ammo into the hole and bury them.

Why do you need to destroy this ammo? Odds are it is still good if it has been kept dry- you might find someone who would take it off your hands. Even 100-year-old ammo that has been stored reasonably well is still good.

"Turn it in at your local police department. They will make sure it is properly disposed of."

OP tried that - they wouldn't take it.

If it were me, I'd toss it in a lake.

Don't destroy it!!!

Go to the Trading Post section of this forum, or any other gun forum.
Advertise it as Free if they send you a few bucks for shipping.
Ammo can be shipped UPS cheap and easy, but not via post office.

Where do you live, and how much do you have?

Please people do not throw it in a lake. Most communities are now required to have National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permits (NPDES) which carry up to $5,000 per day penalties for Illicit Discharges to a water body. More than likely you will not get caught; but you don't want to be the one in a million that they make an example of. As other suggested, the trader board is a great way to get rid of it where another THR member gets some use of it.

Amazes me that we live in a world where instead of finding a good home for X item, people toss it in the trash or in a lake!!!

Duh! Why not just give it away to someone that can use it???

How many times have you been walking through the woods and found someone else's garbage (tires, stove, water heater, etc.)? Disgusts me.

Yes, donate it to your local gun range and someone will use it.

I agree, give the ammo away instead of trying to destroy it.

If you can't give it away locally give it to someone on this forum.

(I'm a little surprised the local Sheriff won't take it off your hands)

You could give one round to each "Trick or Treater" on Halloween. Next year, parents would NOT be bringing kids by your house. Think how much money you'd save on candy next year!

Yes, but all the members of this board would be lined up at his house waiting for our ammo handout. "Trick or Ammo!"

I was gonna suggest he sprinkle it around the front door of a bank.
Bet the police will take it then!

But that wasn't very High Road of me was it?

Destroy by Fire

The burn barrel, 55 gal steel drum at the club eats bad ammo. Ammo explodes, bullets don't seem to go anywhere. (I would not hang around to find out) USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The High Road, nor the staff of THR assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information.
