I've got a '78 Colt Detective Special and have been looking for grips for it. My question is; Is this a D frame? I thought that they used two frames for the DS.

Thanks

Your DS has the shorter grip frame. When you order grips tell the sales person your weapon was made after 1972 or its the third issue.

The one with the shrouded bbl. Before 72 Colt had a variety of grip frames. They standardized on 72 and later.

For factory and other grips for your DS, see here. I've bought several sets from them. Also, for a very good economical grip, CDNN has a bunch for less than $10, including Pachmayr Compac's, etc.

I think the "DS" frame refered to either the stainless or 357 mag models
There is no "DS" frame. There is a "SF" (Small Frame) frame that took the place of the "D" frame that the new Detective Special and Magnum Carry was built on.

Here's a pic that shows the difference between the older model grip frames for the Detective Special, Agent and Cobra and the shorter grip frame of the shrouded barrel models.

Good illustration. I wonder why your Detective special doesn't have the leaf spring like mine does? Mine is 1966, 2nd issue. Is yours a different action inside — a newer version?
