Detroit Police destroy seized guns

DETROIT -- More than 670 rifles, handguns and assault weapons that were confiscated previously by Detroit Police officers were destroyed this morning.

So far this year, the department has destroyed about 3,080 firearms confiscated by officers. Since 2002, more than 83,720 seized guns have been destroyed.

Destroying the guns frees up inventory in the evidence storeroom and ensures that the weapons to do not wind up back on the streets, police officials said.

The economy of Detroit and Michigan in general is in a shambles- Instead of reselling these to law abiding citizens and making some money they do this- Does anyone else see a lapse in business acumen here?- Perhaps there is a reason beyond the automotive industry that they have econmic problems?

Many PD's do auction for weapons. For ones not involved in a murder, this could be a good way to raise funds.

No surprise there - they don't want citizens to have guns period - not just criminals. I am amazed and saddened at how many LEOs feel that way here in Utah.

Detroit has such a huge budget surplus that they don't need the money from an auction.

I'd say that the vast majority are like that around here. My bro's father-in-law is one of the few I've met that arent.

As a metro-Detroit resident, I can attest to the 100% pure stupidity that runs the city of Detroit. It really boggles my mind who those people elect to govern them. Our economy is probably the worst in the country right now, and Michigan has the highest percentage of people leaving the state out of any state in the country last I checked. The wise choice would have been to auction off the guns.

Instead, "destroyed' probably means they went to Kwame Kilpatrick (mayor) along with his slush funds, Lincoln Navigators for his wife (paid for by tax payers), 500 bodyguards (b/c he's SO important), etc. :barf:

I think I'll shave my head if Detroit citizens ever elect a good mayor.

and in related news....the city raised enough money to buy 500 new police cars! Wonder how they raised the funds? Watch tonight at 11.

It's good to know that even when Michigan is facing almost total bankruptcy that the city of Detroit has the nerve to destroy about 17 million dollars (giving a value of 150.00 each, and that being on the low side) of firearms that can still be bought by any legal citizen.

Glad to see my tax dollars pissed away...... Again

The firearms could be sold at auction to dealers and the proceeds used to buy needed items like better body armor or general repairs to city buildings. Instead we waste money smashing valuable products so that some people can feel good about themselves.

thank god I live in Montana now, it's illegal for the cops to do that here ;)

He must have went through the Detroit public school system for a short while.

Report: Less than one-quarter of Detroit's students graduate high school

Marisa Schultz / The Detroit News

Detroit Public Schools has the lowest graduation rate among the nation's 50 largest school systems, according to a national report released today.

Just below 25 percent of Detroit Public School students graduated high school in 2003-2004, the most recent year studied, according to the report called Diplomas Count, released by Education Week................

Detroit's government is corrupt as any out there... ole Kwami sure is something....

As for how the police department functions... just ask anyone that has gone through the CCW process in Wayne Co.

Having grown up in Detroit, I don't think this shouldn't really be any surprise to anyone.

At least you have statewide shall-issue CCW now. Which wasn't the case until fairly recently.

Detroit's fortunes follow those of the Big 3 U.S. auto manufacturers and the OEM's that supply them.

Things haven't been all that great. Awful, in fact. The Big 3 are making cars no one wants to buy (or can't afford to drive thanks to higher fuel prices). The auto unions, with their bloated wage and benefit structures and work rules, have basically rendered the Big 3 uncompetitive vs. the rest of the world. So, factories are closing, people are getting laid off. And all the people and businesses who rely on them are being affected.

That's the reason why people are moving out of Detroit. Not because of some idiotic mayor.

Sad. Metro Detroit really needs an economic miracle. It's nothing more than a rustbucket with suburban strip mall sprawl, with few young and capable people willing to stick around. I hate to say it, but there's more culture across the river in Windsor (Canada).

Why should we be surprised that crime and criminals are what they are in the Motor City?

Now I understand Uncle Teds' "Motor City Madhouse" reference...

How pathetic for the town leaders to not offer an auction to law abiding citizens.

Another case of cutting ones nose off to spite their face. :barf:

I went to the Tulsa County auction a couple of years ago. Hundreds and hundreds of guns (as well as lots of other stuff). They raised a heck of a lot of money that day and made a bunch of voters and taxpayers happy.

Public officials who destroy valuable property that belongs to the taxpayer should lose their jobs. How would people act if this was police cars we are talking about? Some of the cars start getting old, do they pay to have them cut up in little pieces or auction them off? Can't understand the mentality that guns somehow have inherent evil in them or something!

Because we know that's how criminals get guns, right? They go to public auctions where there are cops everywhere and pay hundreds of dollars for a gun. Which then forces them to go through a background check.

Yeah, that's how the gang members and dope dealers get their guns!

Why do we keep electing people that say such stupid things!!

I do not think so. I am not part of the "we" you talk about.

I wonder what Canada would be willing to trade us for Detroit? Maybe a couple of poutine and walleye dinners. :) No offense to any Detroit residents. :neener:

Hmm, am I the only one here to consider whether they were all truly destroyed, or perhaps just documented as such?

rifles, handguns and assault weapons
So what can 'assault weapons' refer to here, semi-auto shotguns? Why not just say so? :D Perhaps another tactic to seperate the evil, kitten-killing AWs from good ol'e huntin' rifles and such (or an unconcious tell of ignorance).

I am OH SO VERY happy I only had to live in Michigan for 4 years, and that I am happily home in Arizona.

Don't get me wrong...Michigan is a BEAUTIFUL state. The lakes, the forests, and the many, many things you can do there all through the year is just unmatched.

HOWEVER....the draconian state government BLOWS.

Detroit is a hole. Flint isn't much better, but it has the advantage of being more easily escaped from. Saginaw and Bay City have "up north" a lot closer.

What they DON'T tell you is that cops there can "pick through" the guns they want BEFORE they are melted down. I know this because I am the grandson of a Flint cop, and Grandpa had himself a nice collection of hardware from the evidence room of FPD.

Genessee County Parks And Recreation maintains an armed force of Park Rangers under the aegis of the Sheriff's Office through whom they are deputized. In the evidence locker of the old annex there was a siezed full tilt M4 which never made it to the burn pile...it was a toy for a few of the rangers.

So that's where all the Ravens, Cobra Arms, Jennings, Hi-Points, RGs, Reck, Iver Johnson, and Phoenix Arms have gone!,,,,,,,,
