Google Doc Spreadsheets ?

Wow! This is cool. Not really comperable to a database application but very cool none-the-less. This seems particularly useful if you want to share information with others.

I wonder about security - would you really want to keep an inventory of your firearms on a public server? Some people don't even want to keep an inventory on their hard drive at home!

Ok, whats the advantage of using a DB to record your firearms info instead of just inputting it into MS Word or whatever?

I mean, I can type whatever I want in Word and add pics or whatnot without having to worry about field limits and such.

I've also considered creating a web page for each firearm that I'd keep off-line and then backing that up to a CD.

Then again, I don't really use databases and I'm not real familiar with them, so it may be that I don't understand the advantages.

So, what am I missing out on in terms of functionality, etc?

I can think of a few things :)

Well, I can think of a few things like sorting by selected fields, filtering by selected fields, reports based on different sorts and filters, summing numeric values, things like that.

However, I must say that a document or a spreadsheet (or a paper scrap book) will work just fine for many people. In fact, when I started in the computer software industry I used to say that some manual systems did not need to be automated. It seems that is a minority opinion these days so I am careful not to say that too much any more.

:)

Heck, I probably wouldn't be doing this if people stopped buying my product - but there seems to be a market for this out there so I keep doing it.
