It's the next to last tab to the right on the top that says "Firearm Database" right next to "help".
It allows entry for:
type
manufacturer
model
style
action type
caliber
weapon grade
serial number
purchase price
purchase date
scope mfg
scope model
scope power
scope serial #
purchase price
purchase date
comments

It will then provide a listing of all your entries where you can sort as you wish.

after having read this thread, i downloaded the 'Pointblank' program that ISP2605 mentions and if even for just the easy to fill in, pre formatted firearms database, it did everything i needed, and has LOTS of stuff that will be VERY useful/helpful when i start reloading. I give it a big thumbs up, personally.

As for Third Rail's question. Would anyone ever take a firearm that pre-dates serial numbers and engrave their own identification number on it? Maybe not a social security number but maybe a DL number or a birthdate? Just an idea or two.

wmenorr67- actually i did just that today with an old Savage model 340 bolt action 30-30 (its from the sixties and has no serial number anywhere that i can find) so i gave it one of my own in a hidden location (so it is unlikely to be found and tampered with, wear off, or affect the asthetics of the gun)

Zundfolge gives good advice on the OpenOffice idea.

To be more specific, though, I would say go with the 2.0 beta, since it offers "Base" which is a replacement for Access.

Now, let's start cooking with gas...someone should come up with some firearm-oriented ready made tables, templates, etc. for Base and then share those out. You'll be poking Microsoft in the eye with a sharp stick if you make the leap. ;)

isp2605,

I am a little slow, it would have saved me some head scratching had I realized that the data base was part of the actual ballistics program and not on the page to which you supplied the link. I kept looking and looking on the linked to page and, I just figured something was not right with where I was looking a few minutes ago. Dahhhhh - a real trained investigator am I! Then I downloaded the program. Once I got it to run the firearms data base was evident. I'll check it out. Thanks

All the best,
GlennB

Not a problem Glenn. I should have been clearer and pointed out it was all part of the same program. There's a few other things included with that program that I find useful. I don't expect it's perfect - but the price is.

Looks interesting, but I'm not sure what the advantage is over a simple spreadsheet, or, for that matter, a simple table in Word/WordPerfect/equivalent.

And what's up with that "WHo knwos" on the opening screen? ***, kant u spel or something? LOL!!!11! (etc.)

I work with Access quite a bit in my job life and have created my own database that is pretty easy to use and gives quite a few reporting options. It is designed around the C&R fields that are required but is set up to choose modern as an option as well. It is kinda half ass as things go since I never really meant it to be used by anybody but myself but I would be more than happy to email it to anybody who would like to play with it.

I warn you though, it calculates the amount of money you have in your firearms and when that number gets up to around the cost of a nice Honda Accord you may decide that you want to delete that pesky bit of reality inducing software. :D

I have found that paper notebooks work very well - they have the bonus of not being lost when your computer eventually self destructs for some reason.

My Lord, how many firearms do you people have that you need to track them on a computer? I can see that I will be concerned with finding enough room to store my modest (but fast growing) collection MUCH sooner, and long before I need to create a freaking database of my guns.

But, if were to computerize my records, I'd either use Excel, or even just one Word document.

Third Rail: I have the same issue with the same gun. I had someone etch numbers that would identify it as mine and only I know what they are, where they are and what they mean. I then used this as an inventory tracking number.

BTW, I use Lotus Notes for my inventory. Easy to set up and easy to use, but not free.

Berek
