The original Dicks sold handguns. I bought my first handgun from them. A T/C Contender. Put it on lay a way until I payed it off! They where mostly hunting and fishing back then.

I have no plans to ever buy from Dicks again! I don't care that they no longer sell AR's but they pre sold AR's and then broke the agreement after the school shootings. They should have delivered what they had already sold and then stopped selling them!

The problem trying to please everyone is talking about it. If they choose to not sell items that repell certain customers , I understand. I don't understand why they have to make a statement to anger those that like that merchandise . Making a political statement in retail is a loosing situation. I guess they choose who to anger instead of holding their tongue. Stupid...

My local Dicks has a selection of hunting rifles and shotgun, used to have AR's but no more in NY (Cuz there no longer allowed currently). It is what it is, in my opinion its good because it allows our LGS to keep the doors open easier. The closest one has a real gun store a mile down the road, if it carried all the guns under the sun I'm guessing the LGS would close shop. Same with my local walmart, they don't carry any guns at all and if memory serves me the LGS's raised cane about them selling guns and putting them out of business and the walmart chose not to carry firearms. Same thing happened with the gas stations and the waltons left out a gas station also. I digress, big box stores not carrying everything possible helps the locally owned boutique specialty shops keep their customers.

The original Dicks sold handguns.

I lived near that store too. Most of my fishing and hunting gear as a kid came from there along with countless sneakers, middle school and high school sports gear, bait, ammo, and other random stuff.

I still remember the way it smelled, and I get a little nostalgic when I go to the one where I live now, because there's a picture of the old store on the wall. The only shooting things I buy there are shotgun shells and clay targets from time to time. The rest is a waste of time. I do buy fishing stuff and clothes from time to time.

Dick's is going to open a subsidiary, an outdoor store called "Field & Stream"
While I always welcome any store that caters to my hobby, this does show the hypocrisy of the CEO. The attitude of "ban the evil black weapons" is pandering to the anti's, but they don't want to miss out on the profits of gun retailing.

They built a Dicks near where I work about 2 years ago. I've been in a couple of times just for giggles and haven't been disappointed. I've had employees arguing with me about what MY guns were chambered in. One told me that I needed 7mm magnum, not 7mm mauser. I was confused and it was a fairly common mistake since _he_ didn't know anyone that owned a 7 mauser and they weren't made anymore.

Another one told me that I needed 7.62x51 for one of my mosins. Apparently 7.62x54R is an old black-powder round that no one has used for over 100 years and they don't carry any black powder cartridges.

Although, I do agree that the CEO is a weenie.

I have to say most of the gun counter guys have been pretty good at our locations.

I wish I could say the same but I can't. I visited two different Dicks stores (in Mansfield, Ohio and Dayton, Ohio) in times past and asked if they had any +P .38 Special ammunition. The counter guys at both stores didn't have a clue as to what I was talking about. That said, I have nothing against Dicks and am appreciative that they peddle firearms and ammunition (and fishing gear as well) in stores that cater to other, unrelated sports (i.e., golf and baseball). They do need to hire clerks that are more than casually familiar with firearms and its attendant ammunition, imo.

I have no problem with Dicks Sporting Goods. They sold some ARs prior to Sandy Hook. Not really sure what the present status is. Haven't really been in more than a couple times since. I usually go looking for CCI 22 LR SV ammunition there and don't pay a lot of attention to their guns.

I also buy fishing stuff there from time to time.

You guys can whine about Dicks all you want. It's their business. They can sell guns. Or not. It's their prerogative.

You know what they're all about before you go in.

I don't shop there either. But I doubt they care. They sell the whole gamut of anything and everything that falls under the category of anything even remotely related to "sporting goods."

I've only been in there once but it seems I remember they sold the whole range of golf stuff, kayaks, spandex zen yoga contortionist's prom outfits and, yes, some gun stuff.

But we know this and yet, somebody always posts something negative because Dicks doesn't sell ARs.

Give it a rest already. Do what I do. When I want a firearm I go somewhere that actually sells guns. What I do not do is go to a store that I already know isn't going to have what I want, then come onto the internet and complain they don't have what I want.

Thats pretty funny Sunny!

Theyve actually had some decently priced 380 and 9mm lately. "3 box limit sir!"

Keep an eye on their prices for firearms related gear though. Every now and then they have a nice deal that is hard to pass up, even with their limited selection. I jumped on a deal they had once where it was buy a case (100 rounds) of shotgun ammo, get another case and dry box for free. 200 rounds of 12ga heavy 8 and a box to put it in for around 15.

499 new rem 700 stainless 30-06 and 399 new marlin 30-30 a couple days ago I was browsing while checking out some tree stands, it is what it is they have big box power to sell at low prices.

This thread saved me some time, I would have gone into one of the stores if I hadn't read this. Thanks.

I overheard the gun clerk telling a guy that if the .308 kicked too much for his kid that he could fire .243s out of it and they kicked a lot less. I told the customer he should go buy his gun somewhere else. Yikes. I wander thru a couple of times a year just to see what is there.

A few years ago, Dick's bought Galyan's in KC and proceeded to decimate the Guns & Ammo section. Firearms and related items now occupy one very small corner of the store. I went there once recently to see if they have changed. Nope...it is really not worthwhile to go there. Not sure why they even bother to carry such small inventory of firearms related products.

Dick's pissed me off a few years ago with a shotgun shell "sale".

I bought a case, got it home, and discovered the "sale" consisted of 20 round boxes of ordinary shells, not 25.

I'd never even seen 20 round boxes, certainly useless for any skeet/trap applications.

20% off got you 20% less.

Dick's is the proper term.

A friend of mine has gotten in to canoing and kayaking in a big way and got his boats at Dicks prior to Sandy Hook.

When I learned Dicks was deep sixing the ARs I was disgusted big time. It got worse when they pulled that new store that would be selling ARs gag.

Now that same friend does not think I am being a reasonable person for not wanting to do business with a company that pulls hypocritical BS like that.

I will not ever change my mind.

I will never darken the door of another Dick's Sporting good again, same goes for Cheaper than Dirt! But for other reasons.

The Dicks in Rochester Hills, MI is actually pretty nice. They have a huge (wide) selection of sporting options. So, when the Mrs. wants to go looking for dumbbells, like she did today, the firearms section is right there too. I didn't bother looking, but I have recently. The employees are nice, reasonably knowledgeable, and they have a decent selection. They don't carry the stock that Bass Pro or Gander Mountain do, but it's okay. Most of the firearms are the common type, nothing terribly expensive. All in all, it's still a sports shop and it's always fun to go to a sports shop.

A Dicks just opened in the town next to Prescott AZ. I finally went in to take a peek... Same experience. The LGSs are much better supplied and probably have better prices. The wife looked for hiking pants. Found some for men but not for the babes. So much for our new sporting goods store. Yawn.
