Dick's wouldn't let me cycle the action of the Mossberg 30-30

I just happened to be at Dick's Sporting Goods off the 10 in Tempe, AZ and they had the new Mossberg 30-30. I wanted to check it out, and was considering buying one, because I love 30-30 lever guns, and it looked pretty nice. But, they had a plastic zip-tie on the lever that would not let me cycle it. I asked if I could have it removed, but they refused.

I have never bought a rifle without cycling the action. It seemed strange, but they would not budge. Oh well, they lost a sale.
 
No offense, but that's their store policy...if you don't like it, don't shop there. You also have to fill out a boatload of liability waivers to buy a gun there. Aside from that, they have some decent sales every now and then.

the reason is, you can't jack a round you brought in with you into the chamber and steal the gun. saw it happen once on wildest police videos. clerk in a sports authority type store handed a guy a revolver. dude then slips a round into the gun and holds up the store with it. its all about security.
 
Big 5 - at least the ones in my area of CA - puts trigger locks on all their guns. Doesn't really matter to me most of the time, but it drives me nuts that when looking at a Mosin I can't inspect the bore (or decock the bolt before handing the gun back, because they sure don't know how to).

No way I'm buying a milsurp without checking the bore. I fondle 'em and move on...
 
Let me put your mind to rest. My local shop has one. You missed nothing, action isn't quite like a box fill with sand but the idea came to mind. Fit and finish are fair at best and it exudes an aura of cheapness usually reserved for Ravens and Lorcins. If you want a levergun in .30-30 get a Marlin or find a used Winchester.

DO NOT SHOP AT THE BOXES!

Not only is the customer service horrible and knowledge totally absent, you end up hurting local business and giving your money to outfits who will dump you and all other shooters in a heartbeat if it suits the upper management.
 
Normally, I agree. However, I had never found another store with the new Mossberg. I usually shop at a little store around the corner, but I don't want them to order one unless I really know I want it.

What kind of waivers are these? :confused:

I don't see much problem with the policies on trigger locks at Dick's, etc. It's just a reflection of the real world. For the vast majority of thinking individuals the policy is pretty straightforward and reasonable.

Accept it and move on. Or change it through some consumerism or something.

That and they have votes and are poltically active, it's not like Wal-Mart gets to vote and I seriously doubt they actually support gun rights, they just support selling stuff. After all, Canadian Tire used to be one of the biggest gun retailers in Canada, but they didn't put their massive economic clout behind stopping our mad gun laws and now the gun section is a small case of ammo and some air soft (at most stores)

I bought my Marlin 60 at Sports Authority. They treated me with dignity and respect, went out of their way to ensure that I was satisfied with the transaction, and apologized for the inconvenience of the 3 day wait, even though it's not their fault. When I went back to the store over this past weekend, the sales guy remembered me, what I had purchased, and asked how it'd been working out. It's been 4 months since I've even been in the store, but he still remembered me on sight.

They've earned future business. Both of the local shops here have...disgruntled staff.

Wal-Mart is the biggest retail seller of guns in the U.S. It is the biggest seller of ammunition too.

Of course they supports gun rights.

If Wal-Mart did not support gun rights, we would have a much different retail gun market in this country.

The small shops are important. So are the big boxes. Wal-Mart is one of the most important entitities out there with respect to guns and gun rights.

In a way, we all owe Wal-Mart a big thanks for their selling as many guns and as much ammo as they do.

Maybe we can all do a Wal-Mart wiggle in appreciation....

Wal-Mart, Bloomberg To Strike Deal On Gun Control
U.S. Chain Agrees With Mayor To Tighten Restrictions On Sales
WASHINGTON (CBS) ― Wal-Mart is striking a deal with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on tighter standards for gun sales. Guns have suddenly taken center stage in the race for the White House, as the candidates make their claim to understand "the values" of blue-collar voters in small town America.

Wal-Mart is the nation's largest seller of firearms and Bloomberg is an outspoken gun control advocate.

Bloomberg is announcing the initiative Monday as he meets with Mayors Against Illegal Guns. He founded that group to try to crack down on the unlawful traffic in weapons that are often used in crimes.

Under the group's Responsible Firearms Retailer Partnership, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. will agree to keep certain records.

Mayoral spokesman Jason Post says that if a gun buyer is linked to a crime, the company will be aware of it the next time that person tries to buy a gun.

Wal-Mart also will also conduct background checks on employees who handle guns.

Let me just say that as a current part time Wal-mart employee who spends his breaks staring at guns he cant buy, Wal-mart is not concerned about gun rights. They only sell the ammo and even the guns because there is a demand from them. From what Ive been told, if the ATF ever has an issue with the paperwork, they just give up their ffl instead of dealing with it. Too much trouble or some bs like that. It just angers me that they like to appear to care. Same thing with their fake save the environment crap (thats why they will sell you the bags instead of giving them to you...)
And walmart is now the same way about the actions and triggers. I like to play with the trigger before I buy a gun but I can no longer talk anyone into letting medo it so I dont buy from there anymore even though I get a discount. Too much of a pain and an attack on my values.
 
If you're looking for a little different lever gun, take a look at the new Henry in 30-30.

I've got one of their "Golden Boys" and it's the slickest .22 I've ever seen. OBTW they are made in N.Y.!!

Cycling the action on a demo has 0 to do with whether or not the gun you buy is actually in good condition. If you were to buy the gun, when they brought out your rifle, you would have been able to cycle the action with the general inspection.
