Did he get ripped off as bad as I think he did?

So my girlfriends father decided he wanted a .243 for her to use. She said that no one asked her opinion that she didn't know until after he had already traded and she seems to think he got ripped off also not to mention she says she doesn't need a gun. Anyway, he traded a nice looking Ruger lever action in .44 magnum. I'm not sure of the model number but it was a Ruger lever action 44 magnum rifle. I didn't look inside the barrel but on the outside it was in very very nice shape. It had a scope on it but the scope wasn't much. I can't remember if it was a Simmons or Tasco or what but it was something cheap like that. I want to think a Tasco but it may have been Simmons.

Anyway, he traded it straight up for a NEF Handi Rifle .243 single shot with a Tasco scope on it. It does have a wood stock The rifle while it looks okay basically looks like a single shot you'd find on a used rack somewhere for $150 or so imo. I checked and WalMart and they had one identical only maybe a different scope for right under $300.

So did he get ripped off in this trade as bad as I think he did? Or was it an ok deal? From what I've been seeing I'm thinking the Ruger was more like a $600 gun while this thing is more like a $200 gun but my prices may be off as I haven't seen a ton of either for sale.

Exactly what I thought. I wish I would have known as I would bought the gun from him and given him enough to go buy a new NEF at Wallyworld.

Exactly how I feel too. I told them that anytime in the future he wants to sell or trade a gun to let me know first. My girlfriend was going to have a talk with him tonight when he got off work about how he needed to go back to the guy since he is supposedly a friend and try to get his other gun back. I'm not sure if that will happen now or not as a family emergency came up for them.

Based strictly on the gun's prices, it would appear to be a bad trade for your GF's dad. It's worth pointing out that Ruger lever actions aren't terribly popular. It's not like you will find folks lining up to buy it off you. I've actually never handled or personally seen a Ruger lever action aside from pictures. I've never met anyone who wanted one so it would seem fair to say that finding an eager buyer is harder than finding the rifle since you can order them from any Ruger retailer. The NEF on the other hand is a rifle I regularly meet owners having great affection for it as an affordable utilitarian rifle. Although the economics of the deal are pretty cut and dried, the NEF is more desirable - too bad he paid too much for it.

Monetarily, he got ripped off. There is, however, the personal side. If he didn't have an attachment to the Ruger and traded to spend more time with his daughter, then it would be a good trade.

Sometimes, doing something for the family has nothing to do with money.
