Wow.

I cannot begrudge for taking 'advantage' of someone on craigslist- I have found a good many deals on there as well. I suppose as long as you are satisfied and he is satisfied, Good Trade!

Keep an eye on that simmons, no pun intended. I had one that came with my Savage 110 in .243 Win. and even my little sissy lady gun killed it. I wouldn't trust a simmons riding on a man gun like a .300 win mag.

he seemed realy happy with it.. he said he would have prefered a wood stock on the sks.. and is going to dump those stupid hi cap mags.. his boys are about 13 or so. and wanted to upgrade from the 22s they have been learning on.. somthing that doesnt recoil to much and is fun to shoot.. so i think we both got what we wanted.

shawn.

looks to me as though you both did well... good trade... well... depending on the condition of the SKS...

i did some research on the simmons.. it sounds like they are deffinatly a hit or miss on the quality. would like to pick up a good nice scope for it. and mabye put that simmons on my ruger 10/22 . and the sks was in prety nice shape.. fun but getting to expensive to shoot .. if you can find any ammo.
he got 180 rounds of 7.62x39 with it.. and i got about 60 rounds of 300 win mag..

After rereading this thread it sounds like you both got rid of something that you weren't crazy about for something that 'fits the bill'. :)

....now if you had traded a Mosin-Nagant M44 for a IMI Galil....

ya. i asked him why he was getting rid of it.. he said he prefered his 30-06..

i think this one will kick prety hard.. its a fairly light gun.

I would definitely suggest getting a firm hold on that rifle... it isnt anything to just scratch your nose at... rock up that shoulder... pull it tight, and ROLL WITH IT>>>> lol

Yea, it's going to kick a pretty fair amount. And, assuming that's you in the picture, you are definitely going to feel it. You don't have much meat to absorb the recoil. Get a recoil pad, a good one.

DEFINITELY get some new glass, that Simmons will never stand up to the abuse. They can't withstand anything much more than a 22.

Congrats on a sweet rifle! Good caliber too, IMO.

Unless you will plan to shoot off a horses back, I'd muzzle brake it. It's gonna be loud anyhow it's a boomstick. I know people will come chime along and say you don't need to, and you don't. It's so much more comfortable to do so. I don't own a muzzle broken rifle but my father has had three and still has two. His first was a 300 wby mag gifted to him by partners of his practice when we moved from Denver; it came muzzle broken. It was a sweet shooter, felt like a '06 in a 12 pound glassed gun. I took the brake off once to shoot it a few times, and its like a rapid when you think of rolling with it! I did enjoy it, but only two or three rounds. That's apparently where my recoil threshold was when I was a teenager back in the day but I knew my limits. he gave that to my brother, who still has it. My dad has since gotten a 300 win mag bolt and a 300wsm bolt and has had both muzzle broken. They are all very smooth shooters. It's fun to see him and his version of the gun addiction!

*disclaimer: I wouldn't recomend anybody shoot off any horse's back unless it was their horse of years and it'd been trained for such purposes*

Probably you should look to get a scope with a fair bit of eye relief like a Leupold VX3. A light mag rifle like that and a scope with low eye relief is a bad combo, try the scope and see though just be careful when cranking up the magnification . I think you got the better end of the deal but if the guy is happy good for you.

Looks like you came out on the good end of the trade. Then again, I have no use for an SKS. ;)

300win mag

I would put a brake on that 300 to tame it for the bench. aint no fun shooting that at the bench for very long.....:neener:

get a good recoil pad and a limbsaver barrel de-rsonator this might help some as for the scope i had a simmons years ago and it didnt last on a 3006 im now using a nikon and seems ok

i have had a 300 before.. although it was a savage 116 weather warrior.. heavy, and had the adjustable muzzlebreak. sold it long ago and regreted it. LOL and that is not me in the picture.. that is my son.. same hight as me. but about 90 lbs lighter. he wanted to shoot the rifle untill he saw the size of the rounds. although he shoots my nagant all the time. we will see. realy dont wan him getting a flinch .. or a half moon cut above his eye.
the eye relief is listed at 3.75 for that scope.

Looks like a good deal, however like everyone else is saying, it's highly unlikely that simmons scope will survive very long if you keep it on there, at least if that's the simmons it had from the factory anyway.

those are good guns
very accurate the 300wm is not bad to shoot
be careful about brakes they make guns even LOUDER
and also the 110 (300wm) that my brother has, came with a Simmons would never hold a zero long
the scope is still in use on a 10/22 but the 110 has a Burris on it
