Did I fire 6 shots, or only 5?....

To quote Harry Callahan: "[I use] .44 Magnum 'Special' loads". I understood this to mean .44 Remington Magnum "mid-range" loads (Read: 240 grain JHP bullets at 1200 fps, 767 fpe). A relatively light, manageable load in Harry Callahan's 6 1/2" barreled Model 29.

767 fpe out of a model 29 sounds good. Good power and controllable.

Very very nice. I have always wanted a 629, but have never found the ones I want fro the right price. I always wanted the 3 inch "backpacker," the "mountain gun," and the performance center "hunter." Every time I find one the individual who has it likes it more than I do.

I don't own a .44 but noticed the ammo prices. I guess a lot of guys that shoot .44 reload for it.

Oh sure. I wouldn't ever shoot mine if I had to buy factory ammo, especially 44 Special. I bought a couple of boxes just to get the brass, but that was during a time when I couldn't find virgin 44 Special brass. I got 44 magnum brass at a gun show.

I almost never shoot any factory ammo. I can't say "never" but it's close.

Officer Phillip Sweet: What kind of a load do you use in that .44?
Harry Callahan: It's a light Special. This size gun it gives you better control and less recoil than a .357 Magnum with wadcutters.
I guess with wadcutters - the context would be Harry was shooting a "Special" loading in the competition but uses hand-cannon loads on the street.

Thanks for the post.

Anyone know if LE departments in the 70s used wadcutters or semi-wadcutter in the .357 mag?

Around what year did the typical factory load go down to 1250 fps with 158 grain bullets? I think it was quite a bit more powerful before that.

That would make sense, all I know is Hollywood made that gun sound cool when it was fired, unlike my .44mag which was just loud.

My 629-5 falls way short as compared to ApacheCoTodd's. :(

S&W forgot to put adjustable sights on it and must have used left over's to make the barrel. :scrutiny:

"... way short...?

In barrel yes but seriously cool and overstated for what it is.

Looks like one of the pistols everyone was going "Magna-Port" crazy on back in the day.

It'd make a great bear-buster for a back packer.

Todd.

I carry 240gr 44 spl in my 29 . Low recoil and fast follow up. I sometimes carry in shoulder holster under jacket . As for firing pin I don't own a S&W that doesn't have a firing pin and most have a pinned barrel. I like the old blue , non MIM parts . Todays S&W with 2 piece barrels and MIM ,silly lock . Just don't get it.

S&W made 300 of them in year 2000 as a special order for Camfour Dist. Co. 2.5" barrel and fixed sights. it is a pre-lock gun but does have some MIM parts and a frame mounted firing pin.

I do carry it at times with these Ahrends grips and not the Spegel two-finger boot grips. Do so in this Saquaro Gunleather holster or the black Galco one.

Got some other .44 mags as well.

That N frame will handle plenty hot enough mag loads. The super duper heavy Ruger only loads are seemingly overkill most of the time anyways for their intended purposes, IMO. Any hard cast 255 grainers pushed to 1200 fps will absolutely leave two holes inside reasonable pistol ranges. Very nice revo. I only have single actions in my big bores. I need one of these in my life! Good buy!

As I age, I find that I really don't like shooting the heavy kicking .44 mag loads any more. I just load to .44 special velocities using lead SWC's. With mild loads they are quite pleasant to shoot.

I bought my 4" Model 29 no dash used in 1980 and it is still one of my favorite revolvers. I did pick up a 6 1/2" 29-2 in the presentation case a few years later, but it is so nice that I am afraid that I haven't shot it in years.

A few years ago I bought a 629-4 and while I normally don't like the full underlug, this is such a sweet shooting revolver that I find myself shooting it more and more.

Nice ! I had redhawks to start and like them but I did get my first 29 a few years back- A 29-2 4" real clean and she is sweet... If the heavens aline I want a 6 inch varient one day.. maybe even a 3 inch too :)

While the long ones shoot REAL nice on the range I prefer the 6 inch or shorter. It really doesn't make sense since I like my 7.5 redhawks as well as the 5" which was my first 44 mag.

Now you need to find a couple more to keep her company :)
