Did I get a good deal, or did I get a good deal?

About 5 days ago, my buddy calls me and asks if I wanted to buy his pump .22 for $50, because he lost his job and really needed the money. I said no, but I half jokingly said that if he ever wants to get rid of his immaculate Remington 722 bolt action .222 to get ahold of me. Five minutes later, he calls back and says "Are you serious about the .222?" I told him absolutely, but I couldn't really afford it right now, thinking that he would ask for a few hundred at least. He asked me how much I have. I told him $50. He said "I'm an idiot for doing this, but I really need the money, so I'll do it for that if you buy it today." I was out the door and on my way over there faster than you can say "deal".

So now I have a 50+ year old Remington 722 in .222 Remington that shoots .5 MOA(No, really. I am not exaggerating.) with a Bushnell Sportview 3.5-10x45 scope... for $50. The gun looks brand new. Aside from a scratch on the stock, and an extra set of holes for sling swivels, it's in nearly perfect condition. I am dead serious about the accuracy of this thing, too. The first time I shot it last summer, I shot a 4 leaf clover into a quarter at 100 yards. I still have the quarter around here somewhere. I'll post a picture if I can find it.

I'll take some pictures of the gun later tonight or tomorrow and put them up here. If anyone has any information or experience with these guns, please share. All I know is that this particular model was made from 1958 to 1961, it had a long action version called the 721, and that it was the predecessor of the Remington 700. I'm sure it's worth something, but I don't see myself getting rid of it. I like it way too much.

This just does not make any sense. I have 4 gunshops within 10 miles that would have paid over half the true value for that resale. He could have pawned it for more than $50. Either your "buddy" sold you hot goods, or something else is missing from this story.

What? Why didn't you offer him at least $100? He's havin' a rough time and he's your "buddy". You seem to be using the word "buddy" very loosely.

Something isn't quite right here. When I bought a shotgun from a great friend of mine, I paid what he asked, which was right about what it was worth. He even threw in a few shells to get me going, but didn't take a hit on the gun.

I wouldn't feel right in that situation...

I would have told him to go to a pawn shop and pawn it, or at the very least a gun store and get at least its wholesale value.

Plus i hope your friend doesn't have a drug problem.

I am not one to jump on the band wagon when bashing some one but in this case I tend to agree with what is said. Honesty, ethics, and respect are usually how I base my friendships. I just read a post earlier in this forum or another about a guy who told his neighbor he would not buy his gun because he could not afford to pay him for what it is worth even though the neighbor had no idea what the gun was really worth. If I were you I would offer your buddy more money and offer to sell it back when he lands on better time. You never know when you will need a hand yourself.

You are going to let him buy it back for the same $50 when things get better for him, right?
I came across a similar deal but made sure the seller knew what the real value was and then we settled in the middle. Marlin Model 39A in pristine condition. She said $100, I said it was worth around $600. We settled at $300, and I can feel good at the range, or when pulling it out from the safe to admire it.
You should consider an offer to pay him more for it ($200 should be the least to be fair), or sell it back to him for the $50 if he ever asks to buy it back.
That's my $.02 for what that's worth, please don't flame me for this train of thought.

With friends like you, he sure doesn't need any enemies.
If you don't offer it back to him for what you paid for it when he's back on his feet, you're no friend at all. I won't say what you would be if you didn't, because the title of this forum is "The High Road".

Unfreakin believable.
