Looking at a big name CCW advocacy site, their map confuses me. It looks like South Carolina may not honor my Kentucky CCW, and I have agree to vacation and spend my money there this summer.!! Am I wrong in the way I look at the map? I always refuse to open my wallet to any state that doesn't recognize the Kentucky State Police as knowing whether or not I'm a good guy. Did I drop the ball? Don.

South Carolina is by just about every measure a gun friendly state. But they are very funny about CCW reciprocity. Coworker is from there and it's no end to grief for him. Fortunately, since his parents live there, he was able to get a SC permit.

SC is funny about permits.

WV sort of same deal. They recognize a lot more than SC does but don't recognize Indiana. Going to get a Utah because WV and OH recognize UT but not IN. Get's me three out of four directions very safely...there being a no man's land over there in the Land of Lincoln where nobody can carry.

You have to go to the state you're traveling to instead of trusting some outside source on the legality of carry.

RECIPROCITY

Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Residents of reciprocal states who hold permits issued by their states of residence may carry concealed firearms in South Carolina, but must abide by the restrictions in the South Carolina CWP law. For that reason, out of state residents of reciprocal states should familiarize themselves with restricted carry locations and other provisions of South Carolina law posted on this website. South Carolina permittees who carry firearms in reciprocal states are likewise responsible for familiarizing themselves with the applicable laws and regulations of the reciprocal state. Web sites of those states may be accessed by selecting the desired state name listed above.

Looks like KY is good in SC

KY is good in SC, we just accept only resident permits which I guess is where the map can get confusing. IOW, if you are from Florida and have a Florida CWP you are good to carry in SC. But of you are from GA and have a Florida non-resident permit, you can't carry in SC.

Your state either has reciprocity or it doesn't. If it doesn't, short of owning property in SC to qualify for a SC non-resident permit, you're out of luck. The result in our very own good ol boys club in the capital. One which, thankfully, is slowly starting to fade.

OK I thank you all. Lupinus what you explained is exactly what confounded me. I have my KY resident permit so your information, and others like HSO with the SLED site, as well as others who responded helps me understand, unless something changes. I have been carrying with my CCW permit since the first year they were issued back I think in the 90's. I have never had to draw a weapon to defend self or others, thank my God in heaven, but I truly feel undressed, if you will, without either my Bond Derringer or my Ruger SP101 in my pocket. I feel a sense of obligation to self and my family to do all I can to assure their safety and well-being. As I said in my original post, I refuse to travel to a state whose legislators don't have the same faith in me as do those of my home state. Thanks again. Don

Quite simply, because additional, albeit, potentially contradictory information had been found that warranted more research. I admire your insightful observation though. Don.

Go to toward the bottom you'll see a map, and a list (I will list the list here any way for convenience).

*List

Certain other jurisdictions that recognize Kentucky carry concealed permits may limit the right to carry concealed to handguns only and not allow for the carrying concealed of other types of weapons. Also, the laws of other jurisdictions may differ from the laws of Kentucky regarding the circumstances under which you may legally carry a concealed weapon. You are advised to contact all other jurisdictions in which you intend to carry concealed weapons with questions regarding these issues.

Think you I appreciate that! I have been a long time "Watcher" of this website then just decided to join, and am glad I did.
