Did you ever think you lost your suppressor?

I've been in a panic for the last two days. Yesterday I realized I didn't know where my suppressor was. I took it out May 8 to a public range and used it on my rifle, then I brought the rifle in it's case and my range bag home. The rifle went into the house, the range bag stayed in the garage.

Yesterday I looked in the range bag, no suppressor. I checked the rifle case, no suppressor. I searched the house, detached garage, car, pistol case for the pistol that is threaded, and the gun safe. I can't find it.

Last night I go back to the range to look around, call the DNR office that manages the range. This morning I call the Sheriffs office that has jurisdiction. No one has seen it.

Tonight I called the ATF using the number guntrust lawyer has on his site. They said they only deal with licensed dealers, asked for a nfa office and got a number in West Virginia, 20 minutes on hold and I got a person that was going to take my info. My mechanical pencil picked that moment to run out of lead so I rummaged in the drawer of my desk for a writing implement that I've previously looked for the suppressor in and glory be, there was my Dead Air Mask. Definitely a OMG moment.

Evidently I had a massive brain fart. My rifle was shooting >3 minutes high with the suppressor on and I must have brought it inside to inspect it. I don't remember it though.

While trying to figure things out I used my google timeline to see when I was at the range and when I made it home. Then I watched my security camera footage to see if I came though the door with suppressor in hand. I suspect it was in my pocket, after I took it out of the range bag in the garage.

I probably should have called the Michigan State Police first in retrospect.

As far as non FFL NFA owners, who do you contact at ATF?

Thanks for reading, hope it never happens to you,

Glad you found it!:)

I transport mine on the firearm. Some don’t like to do that, but it saves me effort. It doesn’t need to come on and off.

Was the rifle shooting fine with the suppressor prior, or was it the difference before and after the installation?
A point of impact shift can happen with suppressors compared to a bare barrel.

I’m not sure who to call right of the bat, but I also hope not to find out!;)
(Except when I read Tom’s response down thread.)

Me too!

My rifle cases are too short for the suppressor. Rifle shot okay with suppressor on or off. It was windy and I was shooting 100 yard with CCI SV so it wasn't the best ammo for tight groups. I need to make a 1/40" shim to clock the suppressor 180 degrees to see if that causes a POI shift in different direction. I hope the clocking doesn't matter.

Thanks,

Just call or email your local PD when you have a missing firearm of any type. They'll enter it into the NCIC.
As noted above, only FFL's have to report missing or stolen firearms directly to ATF.

Two years ago I get a tax stamp for a Bowers Bitty. Bowers packages them in these tiny plastic tubes that are about 4"x1.25"x1.25". I couldn't find it. I searched the two safes I use for silencers shelf by shelf....nada. Cold sweat time. Lightheadedness. Visions of ATF kicking my door in , shooting my dog. Customer going on Yelp and Nextdoor to complain. Don Lemon doing a story on another rogue gun dealer.

I emptied Safe#2 completely and as I was restacking silencer boxes alphabetically I dropped my flashlight and it rolled on the floor of the safe towards me and stopped....against the Bowers Bitty box. It had fallen and the bottom lip of the safe had hidden it from view. I could have seen it if I stuck my head inside all the way. My dog was very happy.
