Difference between a Winchester 1300 and a 870

the 1300 is an aluminum framed rotating bolt 870, basically.

the mossberg is an aluminum framed 870 with a shell lifter that doesn't cover the loading port, with a tang safety.

Depends on the model of 1300 and 870...

The Aluminum receiver and rotary bolt and speed pump action (action will unlock and eject the shell on its own) on the Winnie being the biggest differences across the lines...

One question.

Are you really unsure of the differences because you state:
Nippy: IMO, the 870 is the best close range defensive tool around, bar none.
In another post.

I would agree with the statement, made by Dave many times, (not a direct quote) that the basic American pump shotgun is the best close range defensive tool you can buy for a weeks pay... bar none.

Running a COF with either the 1300 or the 870... results will be determined by the operator rather than the gun.

I am sure if Dave McC and I squared off to run a COF and Dave borrowed my 1300 let alone one of his 870s, regardless of the SG I choose he would still kick my behind.

While 870s are my pick, I've been fortunate in that I've shot a variety of shotguns in Practical/Tactical COFs. They include....

Winchester 97s, 12s, 1200s and 1300s.

Ithaca 37s in the Deerslayer variant. R/S, full choke, 20" barrel.

Mossberg 500s.

Remington 1100s.

S&W 3000s.

A 10 gauge sawed off Greener.

A homemade Lupara, based on the Savage/Stevens double.

High Standard Bullpup.

I may have missed a few.

All of them worked, though the 1200s and 3000s had problems when dirty. The HS was a POC, but it would probably pass the 200 rounds test if cleaned meticulously and with a little luck.

I believe I shoot the 870s best, but the difference is based on familiarity. Given time and ammo enow, I'd be about as effective with most of the others on this list.

It ain't the arrow, it's the Injun...
