Im considering building up a rifle from a model 70 action. As a left hander my main option is the classic model- the pre 64s are alot to ask for and I want the CRF.

So am I losing anything by buying one of the "classic" model actions vs the new FN made actions? Do they handle gas differently or anything as they are both CRF.

Both are CRF. Most of the Classics are fine, but many made during the last 2-3 years before Winchester closed their New Haven factory had minor issues with QC. Most can be made right with a little tweaking by a gunsmith and are still a good buy for the money.

The older guns use Winchesters traditional trigger which is about as foolproof and rugged as they come, but will not be as smooth and light as most others until gone over by a smith who knows what he is doing. The new trigger is one of the best on current producton rifles, but is an enclosed design that is less trustworty. So far I'm aware of no problems, but will say I still slightly prefer the old trigger.

I have one new FN made Winchester and 3 Classics. All are good guns that shoot straight.

You won't find the old M70s in LH. They were sometimes converted, but not made. I'm LH and have a post-64 M70 target and although not the classic, is a tackdriver, and because it was set up as a silhouette rifle, right or left doesn't make a difference. What Winchester/FNH puts out now is pretty nice and should fit the bill. The trigger may be something you want to replace though. I have an old Canjar in mine and I know current trigger makers will have a model you can use.
