What is the structural difference between these two guns and is there a way to convert one to the other?

Don't try converting a Model 10 to a Model 13 configuration. .357 generate too much pressure for what the Model 10 was designed for.
However, it's easy to convert a Model 13 to a Model 10. Just stuff in .38 rds.

The 10-10 heavy barrel I had was similar to the 13-2 I currently have, but not quite as beefy. They are both "K" frames, but the Model 13 K frame feels a notch heavier and more solid than the Model 10. Enough so that a 4" heavy barrel on the 10-10 threw the balance too far forward, but the same barrel on a 13-2 feels fine.

FWIW, back in the early 80's I attended the S & W armorer's school. They told us there was a different heat treatment process used on frames that were slated to be used for magnum calibers. That was a long time ago however.

The Model 13 has a longer cylinder and the frame also has a longer opening to accept it. It is heat treated differently for magnum use.
