In the middle of switching from CCI 500 to Winchester SPP's.(Got to use what you have/can get).
Building some new ladder loads for the new/different primers for testing when the weather cooperates.
Just wondering what you more experienced reloaders have found when changing primers only, (everything else the same, cases ,powder charges. COAL, bullets, etc.)
As always, thanks for your opinions.

Primers in 9MM usually make small differences. I did a test, let me see if I can find it…….

Here it is….

I've never found that changing primer mfg for the same size and class made much difference. What I did notice is that some brands are more consistent, lower ES & SD's. Now changing from std to mag there is a difference, as well as changing from small to large. This can be caliber specific based on powder charge/capacity.

CCI to Winchester SP primers, not much for various 9mm loads and same for Magtech/Tula/Fiocchi/S&B SP primers.

But with PMC NT SP primers, I needed to use .2-.3 gr more powder charge (Probably why they need enlarged flash hole cases ;)).

I haven't noticed a difference in performance when switching brands of SPP. I've used CCI, Winchester, Federal, and Remington. I use whatever I have on hand . Most of my loads are mid-range plinking & target loads, so I don't worry about re-working the loads.

You may want to do some work-up and testing if you are loading near max or looking for a specific power factor, just to be sure you're getting what you want out of the load.

I have used both Remington and Winchester small pistol primers while loading 9x19mm practice rounds. I even used Winchester small rifle primers during the pandemic when reloading supplies were impossible to find. Any difference in velocity, etc. was minimal and thus not noticed.

Good luck with your loading.
