Dillon 450 Primer tube problem.

Ok, this has me all kinds of vexed.

For about 1000 rounds my 450 primed and functioned flawlessly for 45 ACP, using Large Pistol Primers.

Then it stopped.

I simply drew the handle back to retrieve a primer- and no primer appeared in the cup.

I removed all of the pieces, and the red primer keeper end in the feed tube was smashed.

I replaced it with another rep tip, reassembled, refilled, tried to retrieve a primer and observed........

It appears that the primer is suddenly too high, or the lips of the keeper are suddenly too low, as the lip of the primer cup strikes the primer keeper broadside.

I've reassembled it three times with the same result.

Help !

I have a 450 and took the primer tube assembly apart after reading your post and can't understand what your problem may be. I need to push mine in firmly when I assemble it for it to work properly. It needs to be seated all the way down. Other than that there isn't much to it. Hope that helps you.

Ok, if that cutaway is any indication, I think I have a major problem.

My primer keeper is extending beyond the depth shown in the diagram- about a full primers' depth out of the asembly.

I'm trying to get a pic- plz hold the line !

In the cut away, the "plastic expandable lock ring" might be where your problem is. I just remembered that many years ago I replaced that with something I fabricated. That is why I must push mine down firmly. I never had a problem after that. I have had mine since about 1983 and forget stuff I did over the years. That lock ring squeezes and holds the tube in place.

There is a set screw that holds the reprime punch in the slide. If this comes loose or the punch breaks ( I have had both occur) the condition you describe can occur.

Just out of curiosity- is the primer keeper supposed to extend into the primer slide area- or stay up in the primer magazine ?

You can see the shadow of the cup on the primer keeper- thats the specific amount it seems to be jamming into it, as opposed to going underneath it.



The set/support screw on the primer cup is as firm as can be.

I did not know that the post could be adjusted vertically as well as horizontally.... I get it now.

I think the last of my replacement pieces is ruined as well- but you've answered my question, AND fixed the problem.

OK, got some sleep and my brain is less fried.

I think the problem is the primer tube sticking down too far and hitting the primer cup. The adjustment/set screw is to align the cup to the primer tube and not to hold the cup down.
