Dillon 650 issue

I have a Dillon 650, which has always worked with no problems. Recently, as I am reloading 45 ACP, I am getting a prominent click at the end of the upstroke which causes a pop which vibrates the shell plate enough that little bit of powder gets knocked out of a charged case as it moves to the next station. It amounts to about 0.1g of powder loss.

Any idea what could cause this?

detent ball under the shell plate possibly? dirty or sticking up too far causing plate to "snap" into place. I know they make replacement bearings made of plastic to help reduce the jolt

Do you ever (not often, but, ever) lubricate any of the press's linkage with gun oil? Perhaps, as Jmoreno noted, a dry detent ball could be a cause.

I let my left forefinger ride the shellplate as it goes around and this to help mine.

I haven't seen that specific issue but you ought to call dillon. They're real good at diagnosing stuff from my lamebrained descriptions

Some people cut a coil off the detent Spring, some put an o-ring on one of the brass buttons to hold tension on the plate, some put a finger on the plate or case to apply tension, some tighten the center pivot bolt.

Mine do the same thing, more or less. I keep thinking about the aftermarket bearing that is supposed to ease the final placement (snap), but continue to use my left hand to cushion the action.

I have heard of others having the same issue , I can't remember now where I read it. But he got the bearing and it seemed to solve the problem. I keep meaning to get it for my own 650 but haven't done it yet.

My 650 was really bad at snapping and powder falling out with 9mm . I used the finger on the shell plate to reduce the "snap" for a long time. I finally bought a plastic ball upgrade kit on Ebay. This works to smooth out the action and the "snap" is totally eliminated. There are other upgrades that also make the press work a lot better.

At first I had this problem with short pistol cases like 9mm. Some patience while adjusting the center pivot bolt for the shell plate fixed the issue. When just loose enough to allow the detent ball to position the shell plate but tight enough to dampen the "snap", the problem is pretty much gone.

Patience is key and it may take some time to adjust because the adjustment changes slightly as the lock screw is tightened. Just use the end of the allen wrench as a gauge and watch how far you move is when tightening and loosening. Small amounts at the end are REAL small amounts of movement at the screw.

Yup! Just call Dillon. They have a spring with less punch. They know the problem and will send you the spring.
