Went out to the shop today to load up some 45. This will be my second "run" on the new 650. The first run went pretty smooth. After about 50 rounds I stopped and filled the primer feed with about 50 primers. All seemed to be going well. After about 30 pulls of the handle after I filled the feed I stopped to check how the rounds looked...................it appears that the last 15 or so did not get a primer inserted. I checked the feed and the "tattle tale" rod was still indicating that there were plenty of primers in the feed. I had to start to play with the machine and "ram" the tattle tell rod in a few times to get primers to go through the feed mechanism. I was running CCI LP primers. I got everything back running for about another 15 rounds and then the same problem came up :banghead::banghead::banghead:...... I tried to take the feed tube off of the feed assemble to see if there was something in there that didn't belong but thought I'd check here first before I rip this thing apart. I ran some dummy rounds through the machine, about 40 of them and every few pulls the primers were hanging up in the feed mechanism. I could "clear" the jam up by tapping the tattle tale rod and pushing the primers down. I also noticed that if you have zero primers in the machine it takes 8 pulls to get them to the "insert" stage. Anybody have any experience with primer feed problems in the 650? Also is 8 pulls normal to get started with the primers in the correct position?

It shouldn't be that hard to check to make sure the primer system is clean... check youtube, then pop off the assembly and check for gunk is what I would do. Mine is probably overdue.

Maybe different for large, but for small it takes six clicks of the primer system to get one "on deck" in the correct spot for me. When I start loading on an empty press, I do the following order:

-Throw cases in the casefeeder
-Put primers in the primer feed
-Six clicks of primer system
-Turn on case feeder and let some cases buffer up in the tube
-Add powder any time if necessary
-Start loading.

This puts the first primer right where it needs to be.

It could be there is a mangled primer wrapped up in the carousel(feed wheel) and that is causing the grief.
A weak press mounting or a bump against the press will make it easier for one to flip sideways down there and if it does it can scratch and gouge that wheel if you keep pulling the handle.

I would remove it, clean the parts and replace.

What NY was saying is that you manually index the priming arm without moving the ram until the primers make it around.

If you have more than one Dillon press, make sure your primer tube has the brass tip. All of the others are blue or red plastic.

Last night I took the primer feed assemble apart. Couldn't find anything that appeared wrong. I ran another 100 primers through it (just the primer feed, not reloading shells) and it ran fine. Not sure if the tip is brass or not. Need to check that. There is a brass tipped tube in one of the plastic bags of "spare" parts.................what is that for??????

Fwiw, I have a brushless .177-cal boresnake (for air pistol) that I periodically run through my primer feed tube. The one time I had primers hanging up in there, it cleared the problem right up.
