Dillon Toolhead Stands: Ten for the Price of One!

I posted a few months ago asking for ideas on DIY stands for Dillon toolheads. The little things seem like a silly idea until you try one, and then you realize they're nice to have. But at $20+ each, they seem terribly overpriced.

Well, after I made a few measurements and sketched things out on a napkin, I realized they are terribly overpriced. :) Behold:

Now, when I said ten for the price of one, I wasn't being totally forthcoming with my math. It's more like ten for the price of one half--assuming you already have the right forstner bit.

For anyone interested in the critical dimensions you'll want in your head as you drive to Home Depot, the dowels (which is to say the ID of the toolhead center hole) are 0.75 inches and you'll want about 1 inch of PVC pipe for the standoff height.
 
What load are you using with your 308 tool head that uses the small powder bar?

Good eye! That's actually a new powder measure that I got recently. Stuck it on the toolhead because it felt naked without one, and haven't loaded .308 since then. Actually I'm glad you mentioned it; I might've gone crazy trying to figure out why my throws were so light. :)

Thought it might have been some subsonic loads, had to ask.
 
Hey I have the same setup nearly. Only difference is I used a piece of 2x10 I had laying around, but used the same wood dowel, and PVC. I think I had $5-$6 in mine. $20 is crazy for a piece of Plastic.
 
If you are referring to the Dillon tool head holder as being plastic, it is not. Its cast and extremely sturdy.

I like the dowel and PVC idea...I only have 3 tool heads though. Looks like and excuse to add a few!

My bad. I don't have any myself. I just couldn't see paying for them.
 
Very nice, I've thought of doing the same thing myself. The Dillon stand is pricey, but it also holds the shell plate and locator pins. Although those can easily be stored with the other caliber conversion bits. Where did the knobs for powder adjustments come from? None of my powder measures came with knobs. :(

They press on over the hex head. I just ordered a pack of 10 in gray from McMaster Carr. Part number 94052A043

They don't have blue though.
 
The blue knobs are cheap on eBay. Just search for Dillon Knob.

I didn't care about slots for the shell plate and pins since you still need to keep the rest of the caliber conversion stuff in its separate case. Easy enough to drill three holes and rout a slot if you wanna. :)
 
I think the guy that sells the blue knobs on ebay is bigred44 - a nice guy to deal with, and he also sells very large spring clips for your primer pickup tubes. They are a lot more convenient than the small ones.
