Disaster prep for family of five

What would you do to perpare a bug in disaster kit for a family of five, females age 18 and 46, males 20, 23, and 47?
Also a smaller, bug out kit for all five.
I've finally convinced my parents after the Katrina mess that we need to be prepared as a family for whatever might come along. I don't live with them, (23) but they are about 5 miles away. In the event of a major disaster, I'll make my way to their house, or they could grab the bug out stuff and make their way to mine. I've got my own bug in and out kits at my place, but the plan is go get the whole family together at my parent's place, or at least bugging out together if possible.
I've got the firearms covered. I'm thinking 12 gauge pump, .357 magnum revolver, and 10/22.

this horse has been ridden hard, and put away wet, several times since katrina. I would do a search, and multiply the results by 5.

I think I'd make sure I had a place to go, had a way to get there, and set things up so I could leave early with everything I needed.

Seems to me that you might buy a centrefire rifle of some kind also.

5 VHF radios and LOTS of spare batteries. Just read an article re:Katrina; como went down the tubes! You need to know if they're coming to you or vice-versa. Otherwise, search here and read!

You're going to have to provide some more information.

Are ya'll in the ranch area or San Diego sprawl?

Are you interested in dealing with earth quake, the fires that have hit the area, mudslides? All of these require you to get out not in.

I can't think of much in the way of natural disasters in the San Diego area that don't call for running away instead of forting up.

EQ requires you to live outdoors in tents on supplies you've stored in a lightweight shelter so you can recover them from the rubble.

Fires require you to get out as do the mudslide scenario.

Congrats on conviencing those around you to prepare...not an easything to do although the recent hurricanes have made it easier to do.
