Hokay,

I'm sure I am spelling it wrong.

But a close relative is in the hospital dealing with this.

He is going to do five days on IV antibiotics,

and then the docs will decide whether to do surgery.

Any comments from anybody who has,

been there,

done that,

got the tshirt.

Any comments,

will be much appreciated.

Diverticulitus. Serious disease of the colon, treatable. I haven't been there, done that. My wife is a Histologic technician and I asked her what you were asking for.

If this is closed as OT, you are free to PM me, my wife will answer what questions she can.

Diverticulosis is a condition where there are pockets in the sides of the colon where weak spots have bulged out. It is fairly common and becomes more common with age--approximately half of Americans over 60 have this condition. It generally has mild or no symptoms

In Diverticulitis, those pockets become inflamed or infected.

People with diverticulosis can alter their diet to help prevent diverticulitis.

Diverticulitis may clear up with antibiotic treatment, or it may require that a needle be used to drain abcesses, or it may even require surgery.

In severe cases, part of the colon may need to be removed. This is not an uncommon procedure and shouldn't be life-threatening (assuming there are no other complicating issues such as extreme age, or other health problems, etc.) although it may require a lifestyle change if a significant amount of the colon is removed. That would be unlikely, however.
