So I read the stick about what's your game first. It looks like small bore rifle competitions are the closest thing to what I want, but I'm not sure. I'd really like to get involved in some shooting competitions just for fun. I'd like to shoot with either a .22 rifle or a centerfire rifle. I'd like to use a scope so it sounds like the high power matches aren't what I'd want, and I don't want to do super rapid firing. I also don't want to do any 1000+ yard shooting. I'm thinking maybe up to 300 yards. Are small bore competitions what I need to seek out? Or are there other options?
Do competititions like I want to participate in exist?

Smallbore matches are generally shot at 50-100 yards, with a few 200 yard matches for kicks and giggles (though I remember watching my parents shoot .22s at 400 yards and hitting a 1ft diameter plate 80% of the time). That's my game and I'd say it's a good place to start. Smallbore will highly tune your shooting fundamentals making you a better shooter for when you go out to the longer distances with bigger guns.
Smallbore ammo is also pretty cheap compared to high power. It could be a good practice method for you no matter what you shoot.

If you want to shoot a scoped .22 rifle and not do a lot of run and gun, you might look into shooting rimfire benchrest matches.

Even high end smallbore shooting usually tops out at 100 yards. The occasional longer range match is kind of a novelty event.
Regulation Highpower is shot at ranges of 200,300, and 600 yards, but there are a lot of ranges with less space shooting reduced targets at 100 or 200 yards.

I shot small bore prone at the Nationals at Camp Perry this year.
You shoot 120 rounds in a day, all prone. Distance is 50 yards, 50 meters, 100 yards.
I like the fact you shoot in the shade, and you sit under your Pop Up in the shade when the other relay is shooting. You don't have to die in the direct sunlight.
By the way, shooting a good score is hard. Everything has to be right for the bullet to go in the ten ring. Since the bullet is still in the barrel for a long time after you break the shot, all your sins of position, followthrough, trigger pull, sight alignment, get revealed on target. Absolutely unforgiving, and you see it because you are not flinching.

With a 50 yard zero, most .22lr ammo is around 48" low at 200 yds and 156" low at 300. 400 seems a pretty far stretch as from 290 yards to 300 yards the bullet drops about 12” also you are around 156“ (13 feet) low at that point (at 400 around 300" or 25 feet).
Also you have to have custom bases even as close as 300 yards as you have to compensate for around 40 MOA of drop. At 400 you might as well use artillery figures as the drop is around 70 MOA.
