I have two J-frame S&W revolvers, a 442 and a M&P 340. I want to purchase wood grips for concealed carry.

Are these frames both round butt, square butt, or one of each? The frame of the M&p 340 appears to be more square than round. It requires the little wedge tool to remove as opposed to the screw on the 442.

Can somebody recommend some good wood grips? I've been eyeballing Eagle Grips Secret Service line, but I need to know what kind of frame I have.

Thanks!!

Round Butt vs. Square Butt, handy pictures explaining it all.

Sounds like one of the trick questions a wife asks and the husband has no right answer to choose from.

Take the grips off your revolver. Then look at the shape of the metal skeleton that's left.

that's how you tell.

You (or rather, the guns:p) should have round butts.

These are merely different shaped grips, with different methods of attachment. If you take the grips off and look at the frames underneath, those should be identical.

I like Badger Custom Grips best and have a set on both my M640 and M642. They are extremely comfortable and are beautifully made as well. I have the full size J frame round grips on my M640 .357 Magnum and the shorter Boot Grips on my M642 .38 Special, both in Rosewood. Here are a few pictures on the M640. I just got the grips for my M642 a few days ago so I didn't take and pictures yet.

-EDIT-
Here are the pictures the Badger Boot grips on my M642.

I agree Craig Spegel grips are probably the best around but they also cost $140 or more. I like his design that's used on the Uncle Mike's grips that come stock on the S&W J frame Airweights.
