Hello All,
I have more than a few handguns (mostly S&W wheelguns) but I don't yet own a 1911. I don't own any type of .45ACP probably because I enjoy shooting my 9s so much and haven't really seen the need for a .45. I have a couple of BHPs and a P7M8 that I shoot well with. I don't compete in any games, just informal shooting at my local range.

I've been reading 1911 threads here and am starting to believe that no handgun collection is complete without a 1911. A local shop has a very nice NRM series 70 for $800. It's really a nice looking gun. Would this gun be as accurate as my fixed sight "T'' series BHP at 25 yds?

I also have the hots for a 952 S&W. I can get a new blue one locally for about $1100 otd. What to do!

Thanks in advance for your replies,

Randy

I went out one day and got a 1911 just to see what the fuss was all about.

Didn't really excite me at all at first, but then I found that it fit my hand better than any other gun I had, pointed like a finger, and was very accurate. I've since gotten a high quality 1911 for carry purposes that shoots even better. I completely love them now and am actually considering getting rid of my HK USP to get another...

You may hate them, but I ended up liking them better than any other handgun.

If you have the financial means and want one, go for it. The 1911 is a great pistol.

I had always wanted a 1911 but never just got the time (or money) to shoot enough so I could begin a collection. I bought a Springfield Armory 1911 Loaded model about a year ago and I absolutely love it!! After about 800 rounds thru it, I'm getting fairly accurate with it, well 4" groups at 25yds. For me, that's pretty good although I can usually do much better with some of my other handguns.

If you want a good "starter" 1911, look at the SA Mil-Spec. This is a faithful reproduction of the military design 1911 and is a very accurate pistol: http://www.springfield-armory.com/prod-pstl-1911-ms.shtml

Another good choice would be the SA 1911 GI-.45 pistol: http://www.springfield-armory.com/prod-pstl-1911-GI.shtml Also very accurate.

Either one of these would be a fun, accurate pistol, both can be customized to your specs and the prices can be very reasonable (around $525 for he Mil-Spec and around $450 for the GI-.45). I got to the point of shooting my 1911 so much that I wound up reloading and cut my ammo costs in half.

Yup!

I didn't know what the fuss was either (I already had 12 autoloaders)...I was also very much a 9's guy (got 5 9mm autoloaders)...picked one up about 2 months ago (a stock SA Mil-Spec)...I put Hogue FG's on it because they fit my hand perfectly. 7-800 rounds later and I can't think of another piece in my autoloader collection I enjoy shooting more...I'm thinking I need another one :D...still debating which one.

Safe shooting,

CZ52'

Yes, everyone needs a 1911. I got a SA Mil-Spec last year. Apparently John Moses Browning designed the pistol specifically for my hand. They're great. Comfortable to shoot. Big hole in target.

Yup, you need one.

My story is pretty similar to those above. I though the 1911 was somewhat overhyped and overrated until I got one for myself. I was wrong on both accounts.

(around $525 for he Mil-Spec and around $450 for the GI-.45).

Either prices have jumped recently, or things are more expensive in your neck of the woods--I've seen the GI for 370 and the mil-spec for much cheaper, as well.

As to the 1911 thing... yes, you most definitely need one. It's my favorite handcannon design. ;-)

OK I'll bite...

 What's a NRM Series 70?

I thought all of the new "Series 70" pistols had the original style Colt Government MkIV Series 70 rollmarks?

I thought the New Roll Marked pistols were all Series 80?

Did I miss a memo?

Since when did "need" enter the picture. I traded into, one at a time, three different Norincos. I was going to build them up to compete with. I got rid of each one for a different reason. Recently our club decided to begin handgun competition. I did not want to use my CZ 75B because it's a nine weinie meter. I didn't want to build lite loads for my hyper 40 cal. Sig 229, not practical. Back to the 45 rumbler. Did some research and decided to take a gamble and buy a stainles NRM Series 80 Colt Government. I was at the Funshow and one followed me home. Next, the CZ went for a Springfield Loaded even up. The Spinger didn't blow my skirt up like i thought it would. Four months later the same thing happened again, only this time it was a NRM Commander. Now i've got to do something. The Springer and Sig are going to have to find a new home. The 1911s and 1991A1s rule. Caution, they may be habit forming!

Do I Need a 1911?

You do, but may not realize it yet.

I have owned a series of 1911s over the past 30+ years, but never really appreciated them. Was enamored with wheelguns for awhile after reading Bill Jordan and Skeeter Skelton. Got into some wondernines and became satisfied with the 9minimeter round. After all, just how tough is a human that a mighty nine won't do the job? Besides the ammo is cheaper

Then into my hands came a Colt Combat Gov't 1911A1. Took it to the range for grins and giggles, and could not believe what I had been thinking all these years :scrutiny: I immediately bought a SA Stainless Milspec 1911A1 and won't be looking back.

It takes a certain amount of maturity and in my case a lot of time to appreciate the only real handgun there is. Everything else is just second rate. IMHO :)

Bluesbear, the "new" Series 70 reissues have a smaller, more tasteful rollmark than the garish billboard-sized "original" Series 70 pistols. HTH

NO! NO! NO! Because if you buy one you'll just get ADDICTED and won't be able to stop.

They're like the old Lays Potato Chip add: No one can own just one

After shooting & owning handguns now for only 1 year, I realized early that 1911's are the only handguns worth owning. I owned following handguns, all models got traded for the next one; Walther P38 / Ruger P89 / Taurus PT99AF / HK USP40 / SA mil-spec Ultra Compact / Colt Gov. 1991A1 / Colt 1991 Commander / Kimber Eclipse Pro II / Kimber Pro CDP II & Walther P99. What I have now is a Kimber Gold Combat Stainless Series 1 & a Enhanced Colt Officer's SS which I gave my Girlfriend because this one feels just right to her and is the only one she really likes to shoot. At the begining of the last year, I had a "list" of different Handguns I want to own later - the list has changed now to; different 1911's I want to own later. I don't even look at guns other then 1911's anymore. I must admitt that Kimber has gotten my favorite Brand of choice (production 1911's).
