I just bought a NIB Browning Hi Power and love shooting it. I bought Mr. Camp's series of books on this platform and how to take care of it. I even want to send it off for some custom work (because I live in America and can).

I have a Marvel Conversion Unit on the way for my 1991, but that's not the same as having a whole seperate gun. And the .22lr isn't a really good defensive caliber.

Am I wrong in wanting to shoot something cheap in a platform that I am very familiar with? Look at how hard it is to detail strip a BHP and you quickly long for the simplicity of the 1911 design.

I'm not sad that I have a BHP, and really get a kick out of owning one, but there's something about the 1911 that's really addictive.

Should I focus on getting more .45acp 1911's before branching out into other calibers? I still need a Combat Commander in the inventory.....

And what about that stainless snubnose .38 with the pearl/stag handles?

Does this ever end?:banghead:

Yes, you are wrong for wanting such a beast.

In fact, as penance, you must immediately buy a 1911 in 9mm and then ship it directly to me so I may dispose of it and your evil, twisted, misguided desires and cleanse you of your evil demons.

I'm thinking only of what's best for you here, so get started on this cleansing, healing process immediately.

Email me for my address so you can ship that evil gun along with all the corresponding evil thoughts to me so I can save you from yourself.

Hillbilly is right--you are wrong.

Of course you're not wrong, or at least not any more wrong than I am for wanting a .22LR 1911. The only thing that is really wrong is being with animals in the Biblical sense, since animals cannot speak for themselves and therefore their consent can only be implied and not explicit.

NO!

I've had a 9mm 1911 on my shopping list for ages as well. Cheaper 9mm ammo with that sweet 1911 trigger and minimal recoil sounds like a good combo to me.

I'll probably get one just as soon as I can find a 9mm 1911 without those :cuss: front-cocking serrations on the slide!

Greeting's All-

Vaughn T - I see it as being the same difference
as me wanting a 9m/m SIG-SAUER P220. Low
capacity as compared to the "wunder nines", but that
is not a primary concern for me. ;) If I desire a little
more capacity, then I would simply switch to my other
SIG; the West German P228! :uhoh: :D

One of these days, I will have a 9m/m P220; you can
bank on that!

Best Wishes,

Actually, the recoil is about the same as 45 ACP, believe it or not. I had a Combat Commander but swapped it as an 8 round 9mm is not in the same ballpark as a 45 ACP, imho. If you plan to reload, also, 45 ACP is much nicer to work with. YMMV.

9mm Slabsides

VaughnT..Go ahead and get one of them beasts.

I never thought much about a 1911 pistol in 9mike until I shot a range bud's Springfield. Sweet! 5 magazines into the exercise and I offered to buy the gun. Got turned down. Dang it. I guess I'll just hafta wait
'til I can justify another pistol...Could be any day now.:D

Cheers!

I picked up a Kimber Stainless Target II in 9mm this last fall and I love the thing. IMO it is THE gun for IDPA's ESP class.

While the purist in me thinks that calling it a 1911 might be a stretch, the shooter in me keeps loading magazines and sending rounds down range.

Kimber in 9mm? ARRRGGGGHHHHHH! (Clunk)

I lived long enough to see Kimber build a 9mm gun? Or did a gunsmith add a custom top end? I remember a couple of years back calling Kimber to ask when they would actually build some 9mm guns as they advertised on their website, and you would have thought I was asking Michaelangelo to paint my garage...........

They did finally buy the tooling to build .40's, but they only run a build twice a year (and they hold their nose when they do).

I never saw a company so .45 caliber fixated.

BTW: I got my 9mm 1911 from STI, and it is WAYYYYY better than a Kimber for about the same price (STI Trojan = $900)

I had a 9mm Springfield Stainless Target Loaded... very reliable other than a magazine issue which was replaced completely free by Springfield. One thing that did somewhat surprise me is that the recoil wasn't as dramatically lighter as I had expected. Of course, to get it reliable, the right spring to work with the weight of the slide... I guess I should have expected it. Keep in mind, I have zero problem with the recoil of a 45ACP 1911.

Mine was as accurate and reliable as my very similar 45ACP Springfield Stainless Target Loaded but wasn't quite as well fitted.

Overall, I'd say go for it! :p

I don't believe it, BigG.
My 1991A1 Colt 9mm (an uncataloged model, said to be a contract overrun on an order from Europe - or South America, in one version) is a soft shooting gun. Especially with 145 - 147 grain subsonics. It is just right for IDPA ESP.

I think that, considering the number of busy people these days who have more money than reloading time, that any 1911 company not making a 9mm for the cheap ammo is missing the boat.

Go For IT!!!! I did, and have never been happier with a gun purchase. If you already load for the 9 then you will probably have a new favorite handgun.. Lots cheaper to load for and lots cheaper even if you go the factory stuff.

Can't say I agree with the posts saying the recoil is similar to a 1911 .45 though. I have two 1911 .45's and load for them as well as the 1911 9mm. light loads in 9mm recoil less than light loads in .45. Heavy reloads or factory ball or JHP recoil less in the 9mm than the .45

It is a great gun for IDPA ESP or as an all around plinker. :D

It's not wrong at all, as long as you get a 10mm one too so that you have something you almost HAVE to handload, or maybe convert one of your .45s for .45 Super use ;)

[Smoke looks around to make sure nobody is paying attention...]

I bought one in .40S&W.

[said with obvious embarassment...] I really like it. I want a 9mm too.

Kimber made a special edition 9mm for 2003. The STI was another choice but my Kimber .45 has been so good to me I had to get her a little sister.

VaughnT, the one thing about 9mm 1911s is the magazines. Chip McCormick and Wilson don't make 9mm mags. Metalform makes some ok mags but they can be $30+. If you get a 9mm 1911, I recommend getting in on a Metalform group purchase (for around $13). Every now and then someone organizes a group buy on 1911forum.com. Check it out.

I received a Kimber 9mm for a Christmas present. I have the best wife.

It has become my favorite range gun. The ammo is cheap. I really like my 1911's in .45, but the 9mm is simply fun to shoot. The recoil is almost non existant.

You can burn up ammo real fast. Now, I wish I had a 1911 in .38 Super and 10mm.

Any thing in 1911 is good.

Lobotomy Boy,

Obviuosly, you have not had that much needed lobotomy yet. You are a sick young man. By the way, how does a Scottsman find a sheep in tall grass?

No sir, you are not wrong for wanting a 1911 in 9mm...

you are, however, wrong for wanting a 1911...

j/k....seriously, dont hurt me;)

You can have just as much fun by loading super-light .45 ammo and installing a <9lb recoil spring. A Dillon 550 costs a lot less than a new 1911 ;)

Not that you shouldn't get one if you want one. Hell, I want one.

Go for it.
I am awaiting a Wilson Classic in 9mm/Super. I sold an SA to buy it.
I will use the 9mm barrel for IDPA and the Super barrel with 9x23 for fun!

9mm 1911's require a properly fitted extractor adjusted to minimum tension. SA's Metalform mags work just fine, but to get better mag ejection when doing a speed reload you can use also use10%+mag springs. I settled on a 10-11 lb recoil spring.

All I ever shot through my SA was WW White box. It ran great, was very accurate and generally made me look good. It was the best practice tool I ever bought.

Its much more fun to shoot factory 9mm for $5 a box than jacketed .45 ACP reloads for about the same price :)

You are not wrong. I'd like one with hi-cap mags and ultra light steel, maybe aluminum frame.

Your not wrong, I love my Springfield 1911 9mm. Its been flawless for over a 1000 rounds, is my most accurate gun, and is the gun gracing my hip at this exact moment in a milt sparks summer special II. I think I was a little backwards though, my first 1911 was a 9mm, and I dont have a .45 one yet. :)
