Do I really have to choose between XDM compact and Glock 19?

Interesting question:

I have had a GLock 19 forever...custom almost how i want it...only problem is after about 40 rounds it makes a blister on my shooting hands middle finger. i can hit anything anywhere with it, it's just uncomfortable

so i bought an xdm 9mm 3.8. Love it. shoots great. I can hit ALMOST as much with it. and i can shoot it forever.

i bought the xdm to maybe replace the Glock. but dammit i can't get rid of it....

if it were chopped to a G26 grip length, and the trigger guard reduced so i could shoot it all day and carry the same (if not better than) as the xdm.

i cant get any grip reducing places to return my email quotes. so i'm stuck with the stock glock

ARRRRGH....anyone know where i can get someone that will do what i ASK for reasonable turnaround time?

and if i do should i get rid of the dreaded XDM?

Simple solution is to buy a S&W M&P and an FNH FNX, and and HK USP (or P30), and a 1911 of some sort, and an EAA Witness, and a Magnum Research Jericho, and a CZ-999, and a...... [insert awesome high quality pistol not yet listed here].


Just keep em all clean and shoot each one enough to know its ins and outs, and you will know for sure which one you'll want to carry.

then give the rest to me.

Shoot the Glock more.

You can tell the serious shooters by the middle finger on their shooting hand: there is a callous on the joint that touches the bottom of the triggerguard.

(if that part of the gun is rough, smooth it out)

I don't consider ruger pistols high quality. I consider them on par with Taurus. Don't get me wrong, I like taurus, but I have yet to see any officer (law enforcement, or otherwise) carry a Ruger or a Taurus auto.

The Ruger SR series (both compact and full-size) are excellent quality guns, probably on par with Glock for most shooters. Glock always wins, in my view, when it comes to accessories and future costs of maintenance. Magazines, for example, are very affordable for all Glocks.

Why get rid of either? Why not just add a Ruger SR9 and Smith & Wesson M&P9 to the list. Both are great weapons and are as accurate and reliable as the others. 'Sides that, guns are like tater chips, 'ya can't just have one.

You've never sold Ruger or Taurus autos at a high volume dealer have you? Ruger makes incredibly durable semis. Taurus is almost amazing in the lack of quality of their semi-autos. When you see a slide cracked nowhere near the chamber after the 3rd round of round of factory standard pressure ammo it sticks with you.

Sounds like its time for you to get out the tremmel tool. You might get ahold of Roy at American Handgunner, they did a piece on Glock grips a while back comparing the Gen 1-4 and he named someone who fixed those grips.

I've been shooting handguns "seriously" for 25yrs. Over the last few years, as much as 2000-3000rds per month. I've never had a callous or a blister on my strongside middle finger.

If one gun is comfortable and the other isn't, go with the one that is. You don't want to limit practice because "it hurts" and you don't want to flinch when you actually need it because "it will hurt."

Nothing against Glocks, but if they're not comfortable for you, then it's not a good gun for you.

Dremel the trigger guard or if that is too extreme, sand it down, just wrap some med grip sand paper around a pen or screw driver and round it our slowly. Its a polymer gun, people stipple them all the time, Just take your time and work slow, why get rid of a fav gun because it chafs a little?

I bought a Colt New Agent and when I shot it the grip safety tang gave me a wear spot, so I put a shortened beavertail on it. Problem solved.

I bought a Kahr P9 and found there were spots on it that didn't feel right so I cut down the corners of the 'beavertail' area, and whittled at the trigger guard until it rolls up a bit higher on one side to accommodate my high grip. Oh and I added a piece of vinyl under the grip sleeve to add some back-to-front width and now it feels like part of my hand when I shoot it.

Sounds like you've got one spot causing you problems on a gun that really works well for you--why not fix it yourself?

I'm with the other guys. I've never had any discomfort when shooting any of my glocks. even the little G36 is a sweet shooting .45. but everybody's hands are a lil different. Maybe you could swap it for a g26. It's still gonna hurt your middle finger prolly - cuz they're the same gun essentially. It's a quandary. Good luck let us know how it works out.
