Do-It-Yourself Felt Wad Making

You sold me on price alone, you really didn't need to throw in the part about head lice.:what:

I got my weather station from Cabelas Friday along with the 300 wads I added to it just 'cause I had the points. I'll keep an eye out for some beeswax while I whittle down my shooting supplies over the next couple of months. I'm not exactly sure why it's taken me so long to decide to give up on the Crisco and make my own wads, maybe my brain is evolving.

Joe,

You can also successfully use soy wax, toilet bowl rings, or canning paraffin as a substitute for the bees wax. ;) The waxes are just to stiffen the lube. I use what I have on hand and melt it with Crisco. The Crisco is the lube.

Toilet Rings. Do they still make those out of beeswax? Also, I thought I recalled that parrifin was a no-no in black powder. I can't recall my basis for the parrifin statement so feel free to refresh or educate me.

Ignorance after all is curable.

The toilet rings are no longer made from beeswax. They are paraffin also. Canning paraffin is not candle wax and works OK with BP. There was a dissertation on this subject on one of the many BP forums by an engineer member by the name of Mako. If Mako says it, believe it. I do and it works! ;)

;) You crack me up.....:D

p.s. HEAD LICE

"You can get head lice if you:

- Come in close contact with a person who has lice

- Touch the clothing or bedding of someone who has lice

- Share hats, towels, brushes, or combs of someone who has had lice"

i may have been on THIS forum four days , dont mean im young or dumb OR inexperienced or havent been on, built or been admin or mods on several others now do it? it just means i dropped by here cause i have several friends from other forums on here! you posted how you like to do it, i posted how i like to do it, did i try to make yer way look like it was sub standard? NO I ACCEPTED IT AND RAN YER METHOD DOWN IN NO WAY yet you felt it necessary to be a smart alec about mine my opinion is its the mark of a small man that tries to make themselves look better by runnin down some one else and i aint afraid to express my opinion should i be?

i see ya have a whoppin 9 hundred somethin posts here, not much by my standards and several thousand posts is what i have on other forums, but ive never seen any one so quick to run sombody elses method into the ground
if ya was to look at it logically, most the hats ya see at the resale shops and the garage sales are probably ones that folks aint wore in quite a WHILE NO? NOBODY SELLS THE HAt they wear! how long do you figger lice hang in a old hat? besides i stated that in all the years i have done this ive yet to see one lice, now i guess even tho you dont know me or know nothin of me it is ok fer you to dispute my word? im done talkin to you as yer mind is closed to anything other than yer own ideas gatofeo has been on some of the forums i have been on and yer method is not the first time i have heard of durofelt, but durofelt may be a fine product, but it aint the only way to do things

The problem here is that YOU have taken things personally. No one said I was specifically addressing you. Read and re-read my friend. ;) All I did was express my opinion, you expressed yours. If you disagree with my opinion then you can state why your opinion is a good one. Instead you throw petty insults. I oftentimes find that throwing out petty insults is not a good way to show one's character. Why don't we start over....welcome to THE HIGH ROAD forum newcomer.;)

Obviously, the point of this thread that I started called "Do-It-Yourself Felt Wad Making" was meant to help a few folks. I guess you disagree. Sorry....

Geez, the past paragraph of my original post: "If anyone has cheaper or better sources for materials please chime in. This post isn't meant to be a this way or the highway type post. Rather, it is one cheapskate's method to make lubricated felt wads by giving actual sources/links for materials. YMMV." I never said you couldn't add your opinion did I? If I did then sorry...

Repeat, I repeat...it's called THE HIGH ROAD....not...The LOW Road.

Seriously, re-read the thread...I quote from ClemBert (that's me): "My posting was not meant to be taken as a post of original material discovered or created by me. The information contained in the post is nothing more than a collection of information I have gathered from others and through the internet. Credit goes to all those fine folks who gave their input....So again, give credit where credit is due...that is with those who originally came up with all this stuff...NOT ME."

I think that if folks want to use old hats for wads then that's great. For all I care if they want to use old shoe leather that's fine with me too. I just wanted to re-post a thread I started a year or two ago on another forum because the topic came up again in a thread here.

Seriously, I'm crackin' up...LOL! :D

p.s. I don't think old shoe leather makes for as good a wad as 100% wool felt IMHO. Get it????....In My Humble Opinion....

I get the impression that some folks who still swear by toilet rings know they aren't 100% beeswax anymore but feel they still use them anyways for their lube recipe.

I just joined, I was happy to see someone on here doing this. I've been doing the same thing for over 10 years in my Ruger Old army. But I'm even cheaper. I use candle wax and bacon grease.

Mr, Ragpicker,
I use beeswax and good old LARD at about a buck a brick (1 lb) in the grocery store. No salt or nitrates either. I know, each time you touch your gun off you like the smell or breakfast cooking but lard is cheaper than bacon.

Dixie gun works has mutton tallow again they were out for a while. I tried your recipe a couple weeks ago using beeswax, tallow and wax. I used soy candle wax from my wife's candle making supplies and durafelt.
Worked like a charm!!! Thanks
