I was thinking of purchasing a 3 screw .357 Blackhawk and then locating an additional 9mm cylinder as an add-on.

Can anyone tell me if the new model & old model Blackhawks use the exact same cylinder, or are they 2 different animals?

cylinders

I cannot speak to any possible differences between old and new models, but having done this with a new model I can tell you to expect some fitting problems.

A new unused cylinder will be over long. This is the way to go as it's easier to take metal off than put it on. I have found it very difficult to obtain good measurements for how much to take off. I suspect the factory has special fixtures for this. A used one will be hit or miss as to whether it fits or not.

No, it won't work. The old three-screw .357 Blackhawk's had a cylinder that was both shorter and smaller in diameter the the later .357 Blackhawk's with a transfer bar safety. These were built on Ruger's .44 size frame.
