With the rising Ammo prices and a Love Jones for shooting. I was thinking about buying a decent
Air Rifle around $100 , A Pellet Trap and shooting to my hearts desire.

Shooting Airguns in my area (city) is legal and my neighbors are pretty good people. The only thing around me is Pistol
ranges. To even get to a Rifle range it's a good hour away.

I was wondering how many of you guys in my situation currently do this ?

I started, but then I blew a couple of holes in the patio furniture. I might start up again. I shoot from my living room, out onto the back deck. I have no idea if it's legal, but nobody's ever noticed. (I think it's legal to shoot an airgun indoors even where it might not be outside, if only because nobody's ever thought to pass a law about it.)

What else have I done to address this important issue?:p

Since I, too, have a pistol range down the street, I bought a few toys, to wit:

Marlin 60 semiauto with a scope
A couple Marlin 39 .22LR lever guns and an 1894C .357/.38 lever gun
.22LR AR carbine upper

These are all fun and kosher at the pistol range.:)

BBs are Cheap.

Crossman pumps can shoot a BB at 750fps. That enough to kill birds and squirrels at reasonable ranges. i was at the store yesterday, and the price for 2,500 BBs was like $6. thats 1/5'th of a cent per round.

15 BBs for the price of one .22lr.

I have one of the cheap Chinese made rifles and a Beeman air pistol. I find these are good for backyard target practice and can maintain your shooting skills. The rifle I bought for about $20 nearly 20 years ago, and I think they are still about the same price. Its pretty darned accurate for the money. The Beeman air pistols are accurate as well.

You can buy air soft guns that are weighted and have cycling actions to mimick real guns. I guess the Japanese designed them to practice for practical pistol type competition (Japanese law makes gun owners lock thier guns up at the gun range, iirc). Might be the ticket if youre not planning on killing stuff with said gun.

Quick question, I believe an airsoft gun and a bbgun are considered to be firearms by technical terms. Does this make it illegal to practice with these items in my backyard. Would it be considered discharging a firearm within city limits if someone saw me and decided to call 911?

That depends on your city and how it defines "firearm". Also, some cities have laws against airsoft and paintball on public land, in parks, etc., usually enacted because the police says they're afraid of shooting kids.

You'll have to find out what your local laws are.

Yes. I have my Dad's old Winchester .22 air rifle and my pal and I shoot into a trap often. We like the silhouette ram and enjoy taking the paint off it.

There is a firearms prohibition about air rifles being discharged inside city limits, but as Ben Franklin said, "A bad law is no law". IMO it's anti gun hysteria and I feel obligated to ignore it.

That said, we take measures to avoid nosy neighbors by keeping our "range sessions" covert.

I think quality airguns are a great way to practice at home, but there are a wide range of choices, so it's important to match your needs to the gun. Some, like airsoft guns, generally aren't all that accurate, but are often available as a clone of your favorite gun, which allows you to practice defense-style drills to some extent.

If you're interested in target shooting, though, forget airsoft and get a quality airgun. When it comes to these, though, the sky's the limit as far as price goes. For a competition pistol or rifle, you're gonna pay big $$. If you just want an affordable air rifle to work on basic marksmanship, though, there are several good choices. And if you're not hunting with it, more fps isn't necessarily desirable. Most recommended seems to be the Beeman R7. I have one, and can recommend it heartily. I really don't know how accurate a $100 air rifle can be, though it may be accurate enough for anyone's needs.

ANYONE can call the cops. whether its legal or not the average citizen isn't familiar with local firearm/recreation laws and odds are it would be a matter of time before you have your local PD holding you at gunpoint. you may be best finding a friend with some secluded property who will let you play out there.

I don't have a big backyard, but I have this one pistol left over from my airsoft days. It's a pretty nice pistol and decently accurate out to 30 or so feet. It functions exactly like a real semi auto pistol. I will have to check with my city to see what the laws are. Even indoor this pistol is semi loud, I live in an apartment and don't want to piss neighbors off.

Air Rifles and Pistols

Thanks for the thread. I believe air rifles, especially the pellet in .177 and 22 are great practice. They are great fun in pistol and rifle version. Rifles and pistols can cost $100 to several thousand dollars. They are inexpensive to shot and can be very accurate. Keep up the great work High Road.

I bought a RWS 34 a couple months ago, then sold it to my brother before it even arrived, and ordered a Beeman R9 Goldfinger. We've had more fun with these rifles that we had with everything else we've ever shot, combined !!
I really don't think i'm exagerating. All you gun-fans that don't have a high-end pellet rifle don't know what you're missing. I'm nailing pieces of PVC pipe on a lakes edge,off-hand,at maybe 70 yards ( our neighbors fishin' pole holders ) and busting them to pieces !!! One neighbor came running up yelling at me once, (true story) wearing a shooting vest and NRA cap, thinking i was some kid shooting near him( i showed i wasn't and he cooled down)and telling me about how he's a big shooting instructor, then he sees i'm as old as he is, and what i'm playing with, starts asking about the scope on it,and even took a shot before he had to run off to the Range at Callaway Gardens where he was instructing a group of kids IIRC. I think we're buds now !!!
Anyway, these things are NOT the Crossman/Daisy "toys" we grew up with. These things are solid,powerful,accurate,high-quality RIFLES,and $500 very well spent.

Only as a tool run run off cattle and cats. It's an old crossman pump something or other with blown seals and a missing rear sight, only holds air equivalent to about 2 pumps.

I've been shooting BB and Pellet guns in my basement for close to 40 yrs.I use a trap built for the purpose and always wear safety glasses.I currently have a Daisy Red Ryder air rifle and have been trying to put out my eye but so far have been unsuccessful.YMMV.tom.

I definely do the do man, gotta do... you may wanna get two here; first, get pellet rifles , pellets are way better, and give you a selection , just like real ammo. Secondly, the two that are need; first a 1 cock, spring piston at about 1000 fps, preferably in 22 cal, which hits much harder than the 17 cal( if you can call a couple pounds much harder). Secondly, you will have to get a pcp rifle, Benjamin , now, I think , makes a decent starter one for about 300 bucks or less, which is amazing.

atleast once a week... its gernally the only way I have time to shoot...

Its also great for getting rid of vermin.

I have owned an RWS 34, and an RWS 45, and kicked myself both times for selling them, espec. the 45. But fortunately, I still have a 350 and a 48. Would love to have a 54 Air King. Also have a Beeman Sportster which is not a true Beeman but a Chinese made el cheapo line - but still for $110 or so, it's not a bad little rifle. That Beeman R7 recommended above is a true German Beeman and a really good one by all accounts. I had a Mendoza-made Crosman Quest 800 that was pretty good but lost a lot of spring power after only 2 years.

For you guys that shoot birds and squirrels, do you just leave em there?

Blackbirds go into the trashcan; Squirrels go into the frying pan. :)

I think it's great to be able to go out and target practice in the back yard. If you're looking keep an eye on Sportsman's Guide. They have various Gamo rifles, occasionally re-manufactured pretty cheap from time to time. I picked up a Re-manufactured Gamo on their site with a 3X12 Gamo scope, laser and light on it for around $100. I have no idea why they put a 12 power scope on an air rifle but oh well. I took the laser and the light off of it and they are pretty decent quality. Interestingly enough it had a problem, the receiver and the barrel weren't square with one another. I sent it back to Gamo and they sent me a brand new one. The receivers are stamped with manufacturer's date. It worked out well for me. The Gamo's in this price range aren't as nice as an RWS but are a cut above Daisy and Crossman. This isn't as good as buy but as an example:
