Do you have a 'beater" handgun?

I really hadn't thought about it before, but if if I had to peg one as a beater it'd be a box-stock Parkerized Springfield 1911 I've had for years.

Nothing fancy, but has been through a lot and works very well.

Colt Police Positive. Has a lot of wear and the grips are shot but still tight and a great shooter. I keep it in my dry box in whatever boat I'm using. Does a job on Water Moccasins.

3rd gen S&W auto in 9mm.

Hardly ever clean it. I bring it to the range because it's cheap to shoot and it never malfunctions. Shoots pretty good. Sometimes I carry it. I bought it 10 years ago for like 250 bucks.

A SAA .44 Mag JP Sauer revolver. Got it for $175, no finish left, yellowing Pearl grips, tight as a bank vault, shoots great. Also, my daily carry, a S&W 5904 9mm auto, police trade from CDNN, has been 100% with everything I load in it, accurate, fun to shoot.
I had to change the recoil spring, though. It was about 15 years old.

Ditto on the Glocks. I have really come to view them as the perfect beater pistols. Used police Glocks are bargains, new mags under $15, and they don't seem to need cleaning regularly to run. I just picked up a cheap Glock 22C for that purpose. Despite being a used police gun, it is still 3rd gen and has night sights that glow brightly. Hard to beat that.

Nod - I have a Zastava Model 70. Accuracy ok, but a bit heavy for a .32acp.

But its durable, and I paid less than $ 100 fo it and it only came with one mag (haven't been able to find others).

So it qualifies as my "truck gun" - handgun left hidden in my truck when I know I'm going into someplace I can't carry, but don't want to leave a more valueable piece behind.

But, thinking about it, the CZ-52 might be a better alternative with the more potent Tokarev round (damn! any old excuse to buy a new gun...grin).

I've recently sold some good looking S&Ws like a nice Model 10, Model 14, Model 18, new Thunder Ranch Model 22 and a Model 29.

Some of my handguns I definitely plan to keep include a matte black S&W 442 Airweight Centennial, Model 28 Highway Patrolman, a parkerized Springfield Armory 1911A1 Mil-Spec, a Springfield XD-45 and Glock 29.

I'm definitely trending toward guns that were designed for some less-than-gentle treatment. None so far are showing any sign of serious wear, but I'm not babying any of 'em either.

I tend to drag an Auto Ordnance 1911A1 around in my kayak/canoe a lot. I have a lanyard attached to my belt and the gun lying on the floor of the boat in a .45 flap holster. It gets wet, muddy, ect but that's what its for.

Norinco 1911 with absolutely NO finish left. I spray it with black rustoleum to keep it from rusting. I left it in a toolbox on a tractor. It rusted so bad that I had to sand the finish before I could paint it.

4# trigger and shoots to point of aim with .45 FMJs or 230 Hydrashoks. I shot a couple of coyotes while raking hay and plowing on my brother's place. For some reason, you can get within pistol range of a coy dog while on a running tractor, Maybe they can't smell you. I also shot a small doe with it from a treestand. I shot her in the back of the head between the ears. She collapsed in her tracks. Dressed out to 70 pounds and sure tasted good.

No paper trail leading to me.

Also have a well worn M-65 4" that would serve as well, maybe better.

Star BM model 9mm. Keep it in locked in my glove box with a couple of spare magazines. A great shooter. For $200 you can't beat it.

I don't have a beater but wait until I break the news on a friend of mine, his old auto ordnance 1911 will be a beater from then on. He only put 30,000 rounds through it and asked me to take a look at it.

Glock 19, bought it NIB. Once I got it home, I sanded the fingergrooves off of it. I recently replaced the beat to crap factory plastic front sight with a night sight, I'll probably turn the rear sight around backwards since I dont like the white outline.

I bought this Ruger Standard Pistol new in 1964. Rough cut my own grips from Tigerwood blanks from my brother in law. Tens of thousands of rounds later, all the bluing gone, and two replacement magazines later, it still shoots to point of aim and functions just fine.
