Do you have a 'beater" handgun?

Taurus PT92 first series with the safety level on the frame.

I am the third owner, the nights just went dim on it. I have started shooting it at IDPA events recently because it still does shoot well and never stops working. I have found it can shoot faster and more accurately then my czpo1.

It sort of ticks me off....
I actually tried to sell it a few months ago, nobody wanted it. Now you cant have it.

They're all beaters. I don't have enough money to buy guns that are pretty. :)

Several really. A sixties vintage Colt Official Police .38 special. A Norinco 1911A1 .45acp and a Israeli surplus Browning High Power, Mk III. 9mm. Depending on what dirty chore or whatever I am doing that might mess up one of my nicer guns, I grab one of these three as they are dead on reliable and accurate....just not pretty. ;)

My beater is a S&W 4046 Police Trade in that I would have say functions flawless and makes a very durable knock around handgun with it's stainless construction. I am happy with it anyway ...........:)

in this pic its the top left.....s&w model 13 .357magnum 4".

ive done some touch up rebluing on it so its "patchy" looking in places.....but it hasnt missed a beat.

i could use others, but this is the gun that i dont mind taking into the woods and getting it scuffed up, dirty...etc.....

the 681 in the pic would probably be a better option only due to it being stainless steel. but i dont mind the extra work that the model 13 brings....it has charactor.

^^^^^^^
Jerry....if those are your "beaters" I would love to see your "safe queens", lol.

All of my guns are shooters as well. I dont consider any of them beaters though. The only thing that comes close to a beater that I own would be my Taurus 605 Stainless. The ONLY reason I would consider that a "beater" is because I bought it for a good price. It works like it should, rates about 75-80% quality in terms of finish (it has a few small nicks). Its totally reliable like a screwdriver would be so I hang on to it. It sits in the safe a lot since I carry my 642 though.

Since my 642 gets 80% of my carry duty, in about 30 years it might be a beater, but its still a Smith wheel gun, so even if it looks like it fell off a cliff, its still a Smith. I hope they bury me with that thing.

not all are beaters, but all are most definately shooters, and most get carried often.

i dont believe in safe queens. those are for museums not men who like to shoot.

No beaters here. Shotguns and rifles are a different story - I have a few beaters in those catagories. My SIG 229 gets alot of duty as a truck gun, but it still looks pretty good.

Colt M1917 .45ACP; CZ52

Sure, everybody should have a couple of beaters.

I have a couple of Colt M1917s, one in .45ACP, the other in 45LC, which can sure hit... even if they're old and ugly. They're not pretty enough to be collector guns so beaters they are. I think most military surplus handguns could qualify as long as they're not in the same category as, say, an SS-marked Luger with matching numbers and holster.

I'll go along with the concept of not "beating" your beaters. All mine are shooters, but the milsurp ones get treated like good tools instead of junk OR treasure. They're respected but not babied.

Same with CZ52. While I wouldn't trust one with my life like I would the old .45s, they're cheap enough to put into a tackle box and certainly durable.

Of course, there's the .22 autos, Rugers for the most part, but they have target sights and inspite of decades of hard use, still don't get handled like beaters just because of their sights, but if I had one with fixed sights, it'd be a tackle box gun, too. ;)

An old Rossi 68 2" .38

I bought it w/ a bunch of wear and tear, and I don't mind if it gets knocked around or used heavily. I keep it up and maintained, but it ain't pretty.

Either my Russian or Bulgarian Makarov.

The Russians sure know how to design and build a firearm. Talk about a gun that will go "bang" every time and do it accurately to boot...
I still miss my circle 10 Bulgy...

Not a Beater, but a Gun built for hard use, I have a S&W 65 with a 4" pencil barrel installed, Cylinder cut for moonclips, Target trigger and hammer, Round grip frame with Hogue Bantams. It will do what I need whenever I need.

Didn't someone remark in this forum that "Life is too short to carry an ugly gun." ?
That's my philosophy.

believe it or not my everyday beater gun is my uspc45ss.since i got my permit it has gone everywhere with me ,but its not a beater.i take care of her!;)

I have 2 beaters, one is a 1951 2 inch m&p 38 special. The finish is completely gone. I had to take a dremel with a sanding wheel to the thing to get the rust off. The bore is good to go and it shoots great...nice and buttery smooth. My boating fishing gun.

The other is my dad's old SA Milspec. I keep meaning to send it in for custom work/refinish. Then I shoot it and can't because I am too afraid they will screw it up and it won't shoot anymore.

I baby all my guns but that don't mean I don't shoot the crap out of them. I keep them very clean all the time and I am carefull when handling them so I don't scratch the finishes. So no, I don't have a beater.

My beater firearm is...

a Rem-Rand 1911 made in 1943. Parkerizing is faded, discolored and missing in spots and it has had some newer blued parts installed. I take care of it, but if it gets scratched or wet in the tool or tackle box I am not worried about it.

As far as pistols go, I have 2 'beaters'. One a Burgo 38 Special that is 3 varying shades of brown and a recently aquired Russian Mak that has maybe 50% of its original blue on it. Im currently in the process of torture testing the Mak to see how many rounds it will go without cleaning and without any FTF/FTE, etc. Lord knows how many rounds were thru it before I bought it, and all I did was give it a very thorough cleaning and swapped out a few springs. As it stands right now, she's at 850 rds of Silver Bear FMJ without a hiccup.
