Just read a post which noted that anyone obtaining a CCW (in that state) had to be fingerprinted. I guess I'm ignorant, but I didn't realize this was part of the program. How common is this? It offends me that demonstrably law-abiding citizens are subjected to treatment normally reserved for criminals (or federal employees).

I think Virginia law allows it, but most issuing agencies don't do it.

The first time I got my permit in Fairfax County, back in 1995?, I did have to submit to being fingerprinted.

When I renewed in 1998, I didn't, as the law had been updated.

When I checked on it here in TX, you have to have your fingerprints on file before they will issue the permit.

when they take the fingerprints they send them off to the FBI, and after the FBI approves they issue the permit ..

at least that's how it works in FL .. maybe it's a Federal law ?

In Arizona you do - simply so they can be sure you are you. Same in Michigan. There are a lot of jobs and security clearances that require fingerprinting. I consider it to be a reasonable requirement for someone who is going to be licensed to carry a gun. This won't stop any criminals from carrying, but it might stop one from getting a license.

You'd think that a photo driver's license and a CCW permit would be plenty of ID for making sure you're who you say you are, heh. I think the government is just print-happy.

Isn't there an additional fee for getting printed in Arizona? Something like 5 bucks, maybe 10-15?

Treylis:

There was no extra fee at the police department I went to. The state of Arizona charges a flat $50.00 fee that's supposed to cover all of the administrative costs. Fingerprinting didn't take five minutes, and a lot of that was jaw-jacking with the officer about different guns.

As somebody said, fingerprints are required here in Colorado. The state law has this defined. It is for use in an FBI check.

The CCRN boys made sure that there are NO fingerprints required or allowed in Minnesota. They never have been. The Sheriff's didn't ask for them either although the chief's rep mentioned it at one early meeting.

When I was in Michigan, and I had to get a permit to transport my guns "legally, to and from range" I was printed for limited transporting permit. Hell, in California they print you to get a car selling license....:scrutiny:

I was fingerprinted as a condition of my employment long before I ever applied for my CCW. When I finally did apply for the CCW, I was more appalled at the local Sheriff's dept using ink since my employer has a fancy xerox-like digital machine. When they didn't even offer me a sink to wash off the orange soap I was even more offended. I felt dirty, damn near criminal.:uhoh:

But less than two weeks later I had my permission slip in the mail and all was well.

Kentucky doesn't require fingerprints.

I was fingerprinted a long time ago by the FBI because I did some work for them and it was required. - Not related to CCW though.
