Do you keep your ammo locked up as well?

When I finally bought some decent gun safes, I took the old ones and made ammo storage lockers out of them. I frame them up inside with 1X1 pine, and put in a shelf or two.
You can store a lot of ammo safely in one of these old barrel key metal lockers.

Yep. But more because it's the added weight for my 5 Drawer Shaw-Walker. The bottom 2 drawers are full of it. definitely requires a dolly to move. Just one more frustration in a LONG line of frustrations facing a smash and grabber.

*snicker*

Friends of mine reading this thread wanted to share:

He has the world's most ugliest piece of..."furniture" does not sound right.
This heavy wood "thing" is u-g-l-y! Takes two folks just to remove one drawer.
It "bwoke" a two wheeler trying to move it whole!.
It is off site, and nobody in their right mind even gets near this...this thing.

It ain't that ugly, just has lots of character is all. :D

Did he tell you about the truck, like a rental truck, full of clays, 12, 20, 28, .410 shotgun shells in buckets, totes and all?
Yeah, really weird seeing a pallet all shrink wrapped with this stuff being added to the truck.
This does not include the other ammunition, at least the .22 rim-fire is easy to get to.

Not sure how some folks do things, but going w-a-y back, we just had a semi trailer parked, and when the truck from the Distributer showed up with pallets of stuff, forklifted it into this trailer.

Some of us got yelled at for having two car garages with pallets of stuff and the wimmin folk actually thought garages were for vehicles. :D

This "trailer" is off site, and good luck finding this place, and if you did, getting past "security".

If we put a lock on it that would mean having to keep up with a key.
Can't have that now can we? ;)

Seriously, back in my "serious days". We had a semi trailer.
Go to Distributor, fill it up, with shotgun stuff, and whatever else, bring it and back and park it.

If I need more ammunition, I'm going to need it in a hurry.

I keep the guns locked up and a BUNCH of loaded magazines and speed loaders ready where I can get to them.

Without the gun the ammo is no more lethal than throwing a little rock

That is correct. However a problem may occur when you run into someone, as I have, who feels that "Without the ammo the gun is no more lethat than a pipe".

Seriously, his security system, with a 12YO in the house was to have the rifle freely available but never have any ammo in the house. He would buy the ammo on the way to the hunting camp and give away any unused ammo before he got back to the house.:what: (why can't I go shooting with guys like that?)

I keep my ammo in locking metal ammo cans. No, they will not stop a determined thief, but it will help keep my nieces and nephews out of it. Currently it would take 3 keys and a combination to get a gun and ammo, excepting the HD guns which are in fast access lock boxes.

Nope not nearly enough room in my safe. I might try to rearrange and see if I can fit it all in there, otherwise, no.

If I had children in the house I would buy a lockbox or a second safe for it.

Yes, but not as a theft deterrent.

I found some molded plastic storage totes with hinged lids and padlock holes at Wally World. Each will hold 5 cases of 12 GA and a case or so of pistol ammo. I keep a box of HD ammo in the dresser and everything else locked up in these. (Three full and one about half full :D I should pick up a few more cases before prices go up ).

No kids at home or that visit on a regular basis. A fairly high powered defense attorney, who also happens to shoot a few Sporting Clays, recommended this with the following reason: "You can never know who may need to come into your home." Your guns are normally locked up (out of sight, out of mind), but a dozen cases of ammo will freak out a lot of people, even ones that would not consider themselves anti.

A fall down the basement stairs could easily end up being a lot more trouble than just an ambulance ride to the hospital if a fireman or paramedic takes offense to your stash. You may need maintenance / repair people in any area of your home. Ever go on vacation and need someone to water the plants and feed the cat? Any of these folks could "report" you to a LEO, building management, home owners association, code enforcement, or your mother-in-law.

My 6 month supply of shotgun and pistol ammo is by no means illegal, but I have no desire for it to trigger a bunch of LEOs digging through my place with a fine tooth comb looking for something that is.

Has anyone considered that multiple thousands of rounds of ammunition in an airtight metal safe is just a bomb by another name?

If the containers are heating up to the point that it cooks off the ammo, your house has been burning for a while.

I do, but not for any reason.

I do, but just because everything goes in the safe... It's not like I have any reason to, I just keep all my stuff in the safe.

No. No kids around here.

I reload all my revolver ammo and usually just do less than 1000 at a time. I am currently buying rifle ammo as surplus in lots of less than 1000. All the above is kept in ammo cans with the exception of a few moonclips and a few rounds of 12 GA which are intended for home defense.

I have way too much ammo to lock up and most of it is in some form of container (Rubbermaid boxes, ammo cans, cardboard boxes) some SD ammo is in the safe along with the firearms. If I had small children I might keep it in a locked room in the basement. The problem with the basement is that there is only one way in or out. Depending how you look at that, it is either a very defensible room or one in which you can be easily trapped.

My friends dad was like that he kept his shotgun out but the ammo locked up. He also had another shotgun for HD but the kids were fine with it. I dont know if its cause the three of us are responsible little republicans but when we had our metal band practicing right next to it in the basement no one was tempted to touch it. This could also be because we all had firearms experience the bassist dad for instance was a Police luitenant, the other a hunter, etc.
