Mike U.

Also, M2 Carbine,

That is far and away one of the finest looking AK's I've ever seen. *drool*

Thanks Mike.

I bought it in the 80's.
It's a Yugoslavian Zastava Kragujevac
It has a 4 digit serial number.
It's even equipped with night sights but they have long since died.

My friend RedDawn, shown here holding the rifle, took a lot of fire from these type guns when he was in Vietnam.
(btw he gets his name from being the consultant and jumped in the movie Red Dawn)
I was shooting 30 round mags at 300 yards and every shot would have hit a man. I told RedDawn, "You were up against a hell of a weapon".

I like them very much. So much so, I'm looking to purchase one..or perhaps an AR. In another thread I asked how to obtain one..fearing legal problems. However, living in Texas and having a CHL (as well as a great FFL guy), I'm told there should be no grief.

I'm only now getting into rifles at age 61 thanks to some guys at the range. My wife is understanding, but says we'll have to add on as I've filled the house with hand guns over the years. The kids are all grown and moved, so if you visit Rancho Relaxo you're never out of arm's reach of an equalizer.

M2, that is a beautiful AK.

I'm looking for an AK. If you are happy with your "Century", would you mind telling me the price range and where they can be purchased?

Thanks...

Indifferent. I think they're neat, cool, fun, whatever... but I can't personally justify any sort of need for having one myself. Every time I think of a reason to buy one, I realize that I have that area covered by at least one other firearm I already have.. usually several.

For me, it boils down to being too much money for a "fun" gun that would see little use. The same applies to any of the semiauto military rifles that are talked about so much.

[edited to add] This still may not keep me from buying one if funds permit.. so maybe I like them enough after all.. heh.

Indifferent.

I respect the legendary reliability and simplicity. I like the idea of dirt cheap center-fire ammo.

I dislike the ergonomics, sights, triggers, and seemingly rising prices.

I am not a real fan of the Mak-90 and Maadi variants, never tried a WASR or Yugo, (Though I love my Yugo SKS,) and I have never tired any of the milled variants, but I love the Saiga. AKs have a short LOP, but a butt pad extender fixes that right up. It seems to maintain 3MOA out to 300 yards all day long, even when the barrel starts to smoke. Gotta love that hell and back reliability.

If I could have brought home the one I was issued in Iraq, I would have - reliability is my primary concern in a fighting weapon.

I love mine. I have not once had a round fail to feed or fail to fire. I would rather have an AR type rear sight as opposed to an AK type, but thats only a minor detail.
I saw once yesterday at Cabellas that was pathetic. The gun felt like it would fall apart if you fired it.

I think NeoSpud says it best.

I can run through a few hundred rounds and not worry about it jamming or even having to clean it right away. Ammo is cheap and so are mags. If I want to drill a bunch of holes real close together I would break out the AR. I personally prefer the milled receiver AK as many of the stamped feel clunky to me.

I had an early Yugoslav model some years ago that was very nice. I don't care for some of the lower grade stuff that is commonly seen currently.

Dislike. It's not as ergonomic, accurate, or user friendly for me as other rifles. If I needed to arm a bunch of people on the cheap, they would serve. For myself, there are much better rifles.

I must like them, I now have three. An Arsenal AK74 5.45X39, a Saiga 308, a Saiga .223. Design wise there seems to be no reason that this type of weapon cannot be accurate. The bolt locks (3 lugs) tightly to the chamber, The stress path is short the twist rate is favorable and I'm interested in actually trying to make a sub moa rifle on this platform. There's gotta be a way!! On the other hand, I must admit that if a target must be hit at long range it would be normal for me to pick up my bolt gun w/26" bbl and 4-12 power scope in 7mm Mag.

Indifferent

They have their plusses and minusses, like all firearms. I'd own one if I had the money for it plus all the other wants in line ahead of it. Not real high on my priority "gottahavitnow" list, though.

That I like or dislike a firearm for me personally, makes little difference. I appreciate all firearms for what they are...individual pieces of a greater firearms industry. I do like AKs, ARs, SKSs, etc. Re: the AK, I strongly prefer the milled receiver. Of course that increases cost.

I think alot of it comes down to which version of the ak you get. A nasty cobbled together Romanian ak isn't going to be in the same class as one of theYugo M70s or a VEPR. Some are designed for taller people, some are rather short. Some have trigger slap problems on a number of once again the cheapest of the ak47 self loading rifles clones. You ship around and get a good ak and it will be extremely reliable, fairly accurate and fit the majority of people just fine.
