DO you pack a sidearm when hunting

Sidearm with long gun?

nope. no need for it. they don't make bears here, i don't care to pack the extra weight, i am a far better rifle shot than pistol shot, there is nothing i can do w/ a handgun that i can't do better and faster w/ a rifle, along w/ the benefits of increased accuracy and sure 1-shot-stops.

Uhhh...NOPE! My handgun has been my soul hunting arm for years. It's to hand even when mother nature calls.

Hey DS,
someone told me they were having a mountain lion hunt in the Black Hills this year. 'Fore long there's going to be wolves, too. ;)

depends how the lawsuit filed by the california folks turns out... as of now, the season is scheduled to open 1 oct and will run thru the end of the year or until a certain number of females have been killed, whichever comes first.

i hunt the black hills every year, but i didn't get a mt lion tag because i am not local to the area and don't have time to pursue cats and deer. i do have family (in-laws, anyway) in that area, and i expect they will pursue the cats since they see them routinely.

the mountain lion re-introduction is not wildly popular... the gf&p already has extremely strained relations w/ many (partly because of the lions, partly because of coyotes - long story, maybe you are familiar?), so i would be shocked if they were introduced. 'course, w/ california bringing forward lawsuits, and politicians running game management, who knows?? not only am i one who is not happy about the cats, i would be against the wolves, too...

Always.

Doesn't matter if I'm hunting big game or small game.

The ONE exception would be upland wing shooting at a dog training ranch.

I've been known to carry a pistol while fishing or backpacking too.

Yep, always have a handgun of some kind. Back in college I was the only one in our group of “afternoon” hikers that carried a pistol, and took a fair amount of ribbing because of it at times. Then one day a good friend’s dog got tangled up with a bunch of Javelina, and who did they call for? These days he carries a sidearm even more than I do.

Most common predator problem is 2 legged, followed by feral dogs, followed by true wildlife a distant third.

I most generally carry, but for me its always been a .22LR for coup degarce headshots, or close shots at critters.

Seeing some of these answers has kind of gotten me thinking that perhaps I should step it up to my .357. I can always load a couple .38 super wussies for coup degarce, with the balance being full power rounds, and have a speedloader of high-output stuff if needed.

My question is am I some type of gun nut? Is carrying a extra gun a good idea. Do you carry an extra gun??

yes
yes
yes

If I'm in the field I'm packing.

Michigan hunting laws.

Does anyone out there know what the law is in Michigan regarding carrying a handgun while deer hunting with a rifle? I have looked through the DNR rules for deer hunting and they cover the calibers that can be used and where etc. but I don't see anything about the number of guns you can have with you. Some people I know claim it is only one, others it is all you want to carry. No one can show me where in the law it stipulates.

It would seem logical that as long as MI allows handguns to be used to kill deer, then as long as you carry a deer legal caliber, you should be legal.

I cant see the state NOT allowing more than one gun per hunter.

In Nebraska I carry two guns, My SKS and my M-29 .44 revolver.

Sometimes the SKS is primary and sometimes its back-up, all depends on my mood :D

in s.d. you can carry all the guns you want, as long as all of them are minimum legal caliber. eg, if you want to carry a handgun while deer hunting, the handgun must be at least a 357... no 38's, 9mm, 45 acp, etc.

In Illinois it's illegal to carry any gun while hunting with a bow. I think they figure you will shoot the deer then stick an arrow in it.

Most of the time I hunt deer with a scoped S&W M629 .44 Mag pistol. Rarely, I hunt deer with a scoped rifle. In neither case do I carry any other gun than the one I am hunting with. The only time I carry an extra pistol (S&W M629 w/open sights) is when squirrel hunting with .22 rifle AND when wild hogs are known to be in the area. The large caliber handgun is more effective on feral hogs than the diminutive .22 LR.

Good shooting and be safe.

You betcha!

If I'm away from home, there's a weapon with me. I don't step in the woods without a handgun. More than one of my magnums has taken deer when the long gun has been available, but all-be-it, less convenient. Standing butt to nose in thick young Alders in Blacktail country, a hand gun comes in handy.

Got kitty cats here too. Mama bears, and two legged types that aren't all that trustworthy. I'd rather be prepared than not. There's six shots in that big wheel gun. Only four in the long gun. Close in, I'd go to the wheel gun. Each firearm has it's proper environment to be used in. That's not Paronoid. That's just playing things safe.

No,
Rational:
A. I got a rifle, why do I need a pistol?
B. Compaired to a rifle, pistols dont have enough power.
C. Compaired to a rifle, I cant hit anything with a pistol.
D. I hike in alot and dont want the extra weight.

I have a pistol on me at all times except when it's just within arm's reach.

Yes, you're a gun nut. So am I.

I can shoot a rifle better. So? The pistol is a habit. The rifle isn't. If I got into the habit of not wearing my pistol here and there...I might walk off somewhere without one and forget the rifle, too.:D As far as the weight goes, I can go on diet and lose the weight of the pistol in short order. Besides, I sit down and rest when I get tired.

Might have two pistols on me. Been known to have three.

I have a pistol with me when I

go grocery shopping
get gas
go to the parts store
mow my yard
etc
etc

I carry ALL the time.....just cause Im hunting wouldnt give me a reason to leave my pistol at home. I have accidentally left the house without my cell phone, wallet, flashlight or pocket knife but NEVER without my gun, its as routine as putting pants on. I dont go out in public in my undies and I dont go out with my pistola....
