I don't do lunch with Jeff Quinn, but I admire and respect him as a person. He is an experienced and knowledgeable "gun guy", as good or better than those writing for glossy gun rags.

but.. an on-line gun rag is what it is, "paid advertising" any way you slice it or dice it. You will never read a critical review there, or in Guns & Ammo, or the American Rifleman, for that matter; get over it, it is what it is. It's not a regular site for me, I go there if a link takes me there, maybe get a picture of something, that's about it. I have seen high praise of specific models there which when seen and handled in the flesh, were pretty much 3rd rate crap... same as any other gun rag, no big surprise.

Some people think being a gun writer is a great way to get rich and famous and have fun shooting all the new stuff. They don't have a clue; it's a tough way to make a buck, any bucks at all. Just one truly harsh review pretty much amounts to near dumbo Zumbo suicide by pen. If you want to play the game, ye must be an in-bed-ed reporter, or ye will be frozen out, how it is. You don't have to be a liar (JQ is not) but you best pay close attention to what not say.

you can blog for "free", and say whatever you want
you can ask for free bucks from surfers of your blog
see if that covers the cost of your blogging hobby, absent advertising/sponsorship or an "angel investor'
(sites are not free; ask the folks who run this one)
you can ask manufacturers to send you new guns to review
just provide them with at least 3 reviews you have done on-line highly critical of make/model X
and be sure you have the back 40 plowed and planted with edible food

Mr. Quinn does a pretty good job within the limits of what is tolerable to 'advertisers'
the limits are not generous, nor forgiving
(and since when did we here on THR ever agree on what is a good vs. bad firearm product anyway ????)

PS
Jesus was no doubt 100% honest
but he knew he was going to be murdered for it, you know
you can only have just so much "fun"

The reviews are short, sweet and to the point. I still do more research on my own. Bottom line is that I'd rather read a short review and see some actual shooting data or watch a quick under 5 minute video from gunblast than watch a 49 minute review of a pistol/revolver from nutnfancy that only has about 2 or 3 minutes of actual shooting.
You forgot MAYBE has 2 to 3 minutes of actual shooting.

It's also NEVER as good as his Glock.

Hickok45 ftw.

Wow, a lot of opinions here.

afponiky, no way I'm shilling or trying to drive traffic to the site. I have no involvement with the site at all.

I just wanted to get some idea of how popular the site was. I asked about advertising on the site, and the rates just blew me away. I had to question how the site owner could be asking the $$$$$$ he does for little 100x300 ads.

I see a lot of manufacturers' ads on the site, and some of the "no negative review" comments here may explain that.

I like it. Lots of actual shooting video. Anyone can sit in front of a keyboard and rant. Jeff actually takes the time to tape, edit, and post video along with his opinions and product reviews. Seems to me it's a take it or leave it issue. Don't like it, don't visit. Just like anything else. Besides, he ain't hurting anybody.

I don't have a clue, Monkeyleg, it ain't my game
but, as said in the Twilight Zone movie..
"Wanna see something really scary ?"

try buying an ad in the national glossies, let us know if that warms your heart

His reviews never show a target after he has shot it. When buying a firearm, accuracy is very important to me. His reviews just aren't detailed enough for me.

EDITIED: Of course I go to the site and the first video I see he includes the target. lol Ive watched several that he doesn't. Oh well.

Some folks have a hard time settling for "I don't know"!

For all we know, it's just as likely they review only guns they find exceptional. Nothing wrong with that. In fact it's smart business. For a business entity to highlight the negatives of any product can be risky. The criticisms we see here on a gun forum would me nothin compared to mail, email, phone calls, threats, and possible legal litigation these guys could get by doing a negative review. So the implication would/could be; if there's no review, it's not considered worth reviewing. What's wrong with that? This approach is just as likely as any other. One way or the other, it's all just speculation!

Personally, I just watch his videos to get an idea of the way the firearm looks, sounds and handles and then move on. I just don't have a need or desire to speculate!

It is what it is...an online gun rag, and shares the biases of the genre. The pictures are good, so I read the reviews of guns that I have already researched on THR and on other gun sites. You get what you pay for - it is free.

About the only thing that is over the top is his obsession with reviewing "lipsey's distributor exclusives." Most of us don't have access to these types of limited run firearms and I am sure he is getting some sort compensation from them. (i.e. free guns..etc...)

TO be fair, I'm sure if most of us got the same hand as Jeff Quinn in life we wouldn't want to kill the golden goose either ... :scrutiny:

I've been there a couple of times, some good info on his site. For instance, I've referred to his section on the many different Ruger single action grip frames, grips and frame changes on more than one occasion.

we all know he gets free hardware to test, then sends it back unless he wants to purchase it.
That's your definition of "free"? Please.

His reviews never show a target after he has shot it.
All his reviews have an accuracy report. Most the time, he goes to the trouble to test from a Ransom rest. Most writers don't. Those aren't free either.

Uh, I believe anybody is free to order a Lipsey's exclusive through their local dealer. Another fabricated complaint. Fact is, the Quinn's are sixgunners first and foremost and most of the latest and greatest Ruger revolvers have been Lipsye's exclusives. Because Ruger won't make them all a standard catalog item. Although it is because of a Lipsye's exclusive that they do now catalog .44Spl Blackhawks. A little information goes a long way.

You can go to RugerForum and ask Jason Clossner from Lipsey's or the Quinns themselves to see if they are bribed into testing them. More sheer internet stupidity.

The results are almost even--interesting. I voted never heard of it. I see that I am not alone. There are a lot of things to do on the internet and this is not currently one I am doing and do not want to bother with if it is just a form of advertisement basically.

I go there regularly. Not to get information about any specific gun, but for entertainment. There IS good information given, but I like Jeff and his down home delivery. I've laughted several times at the way he turns a phrase.

Unless shooting from a rest, that paper target tells me nothing at all about accuracy. It just tells me that the writer may or may not shoot well with a particular firearm. I don't care who is behind the trigger. Everyone is capable of having a bad day at the range or just not being proficient with a particular platform. With reviews that do show the targets, I don't pay them any attention at all unless it specifically says "shot from a rest."

When I am google searching something, like a specific gun review, it may come up in the search results.

Actually typing in www.gunblast.com in my URL bar? Probably never.

craigC, are you related to the quinns or something?
Nope, I just like a little truth in advertising and all the haters in this thread are hating for imagined reasons. Period.

Like I said, Ransom Rest.

I sometimes check out the site when trying to get background on a firearm, caliber or shooting related item. He obviously has to maintain grace with the manufacturers to continue to have products to review, so his reviews are always positive. But, if you go to the website you'll find that the factual details are always presented. Usually there are plenty of photos including tables and targets shot, making it easy to draw my own conclusions. If a detail is obviously omitted, I feel that I can assume that it was too negative to express and still keep the manufacturers good graces.

On a personal vein, I like the guy 'cause he reminds me of an uncle that I used to see when visiting home folks in east Texas. Also, he has big hands, as big or maybe bigger than mine. I know when I see how the grip fits him, it will fit me, more or less, the same way. Oh yeah, I like the intro and exit music.

Let me get this right. You start a poll asking if folks go this website. You get responses to your thread. People that disagree with you are labeled/demonized.

Where I have I seen this before?

I have several times in the past.

If he could somehow arrange certain categories (i.e. milsurps) of gun reviews in alphabetical order, I would return to it for the informative, entertaining evaluations.
