I don't do lunch with Jeff Quinn, but I admire and respect him as a person. He is an experienced and knowledgeable "gun guy", as good or better than those writing for glossy gun rags.
but.. an on-line gun rag is what it is, "paid advertising" any way you slice it or dice it. You will never read a critical review there, or in Guns & Ammo, or the American Rifleman, for that matter; get over it, it is what it is. It's not a regular site for me, I go there if a link takes me there, maybe get a picture of something, that's about it. I have seen high praise of specific models there which when seen and handled in the flesh, were pretty much 3rd rate crap... same as any other gun rag, no big surprise.
Some people think being a gun writer is a great way to get rich and famous and have fun shooting all the new stuff. They don't have a clue; it's a tough way to make a buck, any bucks at all. Just one truly harsh review pretty much amounts to near dumbo Zumbo suicide by pen. If you want to play the game, ye must be an in-bed-ed reporter, or ye will be frozen out, how it is. You don't have to be a liar (JQ is not) but you best pay close attention to what not say.
you can blog for "free", and say whatever you want
you can ask for free bucks from surfers of your blog
see if that covers the cost of your blogging hobby, absent advertising/sponsorship or an "angel investor'
(sites are not free; ask the folks who run this one)
you can ask manufacturers to send you new guns to review
just provide them with at least 3 reviews you have done on-line highly critical of make/model X
and be sure you have the back 40 plowed and planted with edible food
Mr. Quinn does a pretty good job within the limits of what is tolerable to 'advertisers'
the limits are not generous, nor forgiving
(and since when did we here on THR ever agree on what is a good vs. bad firearm product anyway ????)
PS
Jesus was no doubt 100% honest
but he knew he was going to be murdered for it, you know
you can only have just so much "fun"
