Does a little eye relief for AR's really cost $1,000?

Looks like you did a good job on that and should prove beneficial to everyone with that problem...

Well I finally got this out to the range this weekend. I had to re-sight in the scope of course but once zeroed it worked great. I was able to keep my face a bit back from the charging handle and also had enough stock to get a pretty decent weld. 2" group at 100 yards from the bench, and I could do better with some effort. The real difference came when shooting in the stances, since I was able to get the stock extended enough to not have to scrunch my shoulders and neck down to the carbine.

It seems to hold zero pretty well, too, if you screw it down to the same tightness each time.

Update--I've now taken the modified Colt scope out twice, both times after removing and storing the scope then reattaching it at the range. I'm happy to say it holds zero! There may be some very minor fluctuations but it's within that carbine's margin. It shoots low at 25 yards and dead on at 100 where I do my stances shooting. Really helps with the old eyeballs.

The one shortcoming of this old workhorse scope is that it's pretty dark. I noticed Saturday it would get dim every time cloud cover thickened. But I guess the alternative on that is a grand out of pocket!

cosmo, dark could be a feature in AK, with all that snow, you might want to go ahead and have that gradient coating on the lenses like people have on those sunglasses that turn dark when you walk outside

What a marketing tool! "Since we can't fix that, we'll just tell people it's not really a problem, it's a feature!"

Too late, I've already taken out a patent on the idea. And on this entire thread. And on the idea of holes in general. They'll be called "cosmos" from now on.

It's the distance you need to place your eye from a scope in order to have a full view:

In this case, I had a few options. Either pay a lot of money for a high end scope that afforded a bit more eye relief, or figure out a way to physically move the old Colt Scope back an inch or two to permit me to move my eye (and head) back to a comfortable position.

The situation is complicated by my huge head, wide shoulders and generally large build, which makes the AR carbine already tricky to use. But I'm getting used to it now and just that little extra extension has allowed me to find a very nice chin weld without getting my teeth smacked by the charging handle in recoil.

You could always apply the patented "cosmos" mod to a Hakko scope. Same mounting as the Colt, made by the same Japanese company. You get superior optics and a illuminated reticle.
