Does anyone actually carry something like this?

I hope to go to the range tomorrow, if this monsoon ever ends, and was planning on trying the new loads I made……….. in anticipation of the medium bore pin shoot season that starts next Monday.

I plan on shooting the Glock 34 for auto and the S&W 686 for revolver. Usually I will put the Glock in a holster and bag the revolver, but this time I wanted to do it the other way around…..I have the holster for the revolver but don’t use it often.

Which caused me to wonder……does anyone actually carry a medium or large bore revolver as a CCW?

I also have a 625, and while I have no doubt that either of these firearms would be up to the task of self-defense, there is no way I can imagine carrying them on a daily basis.

Foremost would be the concealabity (sp?) issue, but then there is the fact that I would have to carry a speedloader (or 2 or 3) and the logistics of that also.

My daily carry is a Glock 27, which gives me 11 in the gun and 12 in the spare mag. 23 rounds of revolver would make quite the load, in comparison.

So, does anyone carry revolvers in this manner and how do you do it?

My Dad used to carry a 686 some, and now that it is mine I'm going to try it out as soon as I get my CCW permit. I'm not a big guy and kind of thin so I don't know how it will work out.

Heck, yes!

My main carry gun is a pre-agreement Smith & Wesson J frame in .357 magnum, but I occasionally carry a pre-agreement Smith & Wesson N frame in .44 magnum with a three-inch barrel, or one of two four-inch Colt Pythons in .357 magnum. I live in Colorado, an open carry state—Denver excepted, of course—so I don't have to be concerned about printing. I carry openly about a quarter or a third of the time.

Dunno if it counts, but I carry a .357 SP101.

I also carry a CZ97B and a Beretta 96FS on occasion, they're quite large guns.

I sometimes carry a model 696...same frame size as your 686 in a three inch five shooter. I carry it in a very low riding IWB holster, low enough that most of the cylinder is below the belt. Very secure.

I occasionally carry a stainless GP-100 in .357. It is a little heavy during the beginning, but you get used to it.

I seldom carry a medium or large frame revolver off duty anymore.

Back when I was issued a M66, though, and then later a M686 ... both with 4" barrels ... I used to carry them off duty quite a bit. The exceptions were when I was carrying my Combat Commander, a 3" HB J-frame, or one of my many (at the time) Ruger Security/Speed/Service-Six revolvers.

For some reason I generally used IWB holsters back then, which were a literal pain in the butt after several hours in many circumstances, although I did have some OWB holsters. They just required some longer jackets.

I did sometimes carry a large framed .44 revolver of one sort or another, with longer barrels, but those were carried with shoulder holsters. I used to sometimes carry a couple of different 4 5/8" Ruger Blackhawks (IWB), back when SA revolvers weren't 'unauthorized/approved' for off duty weapons, too.

Nothing at all wrong with a good quality revolver as a defensive weapon.

The thicker width, because of the cylinders, could sometimes be a bit less desirable for some folks, though ...

I have carried at various times, the following "full size" revolvers.

S&W 25 4" in .45LC
MkV Webley 4" in .455
Colt New Service 5" in .45LC
S&W 27 3.5" .357.
Taurus 66 4" .357
Colt Official Police 5" in .38 Spec

All can be easily concealed with proper choice of dress.

i carry a 625 about half the time.i carry in a don hume belt holster its an open top.it hugs the body quite nicely. i carry one full moon clip in my strong side pants pocket.I really dont see the point in worrying about how much spare ammo to carry;if you use common sense,the color code,and stay alert , you shouldnt need that much ammo.I used to carry my 1911 with at least 2 spare magazines,and frankly if you need that much ammo you have gotten into a situation you shouldnt have.

I had this built just to carry. It is a S&W 65-5 Round grip with a 4" Pencil barrel.
Not a fullsize frame but close to the same size as a 1911, and a 686

I used to carry a 686. This was back in college. It can get a little cumbersome. I then went to a Hipower and felt a bit under gunned.

Somewhat related but not directly. I just got ANOTHER De Santis IWB holster but this one for my J frame. I've got it all situated so it's comfortable now and it's not squeaking as bad but I find I have a real tough time reholstering. The cylinder gets hung up on the edges to where I'm a little leary of holstering hot. Too much fumbling. I have to loosen my belt to get it in there safely and then retighten. Just a point for you to consider, I guess.

Sure: I often carry all kinds and sizes of revolvers. Not having 23 rounds handy doesn't bother me at all. It is highly unlikely I will have to fight an army, even on the Mexican/American border where I live - and I depend on marksmanship, not spray & pray.

Heck I actually want a Model 21 Thunder Ranch Special. It is .44 special and I am sure fairly hefty. But these are the kinds of guns that folks used to carry. I seldom need to carry 45 rounds (as I do with my Glock).

My preferred carry gun is a S&W Model 15 Combat Masterpiece (K-Frame), with a 2" barrel.

I carry a J-frame snubby almost always, as either a primary or a backup. I've been known to carry a 3" Model 13 or Model 65 as a primary, and sometimes, in cold climates where I can conceal the larger weapon, I've carried a 4" Model 625.

I used to carry a 6" model 28-2 concealed, but now carry a 6" Dan Wesson 709. It helps being 6' 3" and 240#. I've got a 2 1/2" bbl for the DW, but rarely put it on.

Literally, 90 seconds.

She still let's me carry it for quick trips to the store, though

I'm not sure if a j-frame snubbie counts as a medium size revo though.

It's pretty much as small as they come, unless you start getting into .22 territory.

place it at the 3:30 position.
With a loose fitting shirt it
hides quite well.When i find a
decent holster i'll carry my 3"
625-7 chambered in 45 colt.I also
carry a 3" 65-3 in a galco IWB
holster.
