I was looking for a used S&W revolver and came across a model 28 in .357 magnum for pretty cheap. This will be my first wheel gun, and I was wondering if it, being an N frame, was too big for ccw in the winter? I wear semi-baggy cargo pants and untucked shirts almost religiously, and currently carry a G17. Does anyone have a pic comparing the two guns. Am I nuts or will this work?

With the right gear an N frame is not that hard to carry (assuming we're talking 4 in. or less). You will need a good leather belt and a holster that will not shift around. In the winter I sometimes carry a 4 in. M57(.41 Mag). Yes, it's heavy but it will flat drop a zombie.

What length barrel are we talking about? A K frame would be a bit easier to carry but just about anything is doable.

It's a 4 incher I'm looking at. I planned on getting a good belt and holster for IWB. Do you guys carry inside or outside the pants?

I really wish I could see my G17 next to this gun (found it on the net at a shop about an hour and a half away and haven't gotten up there to fondle it) as it would help me see how big these guns really are.

My glock has a 4.5" barrel, but I don't see how that would compare to a revolver. Are they close, or apples and oranges?

Large Revolver

I carry a 5.5 inch Colt Single Action Army in an El Paso Saddlery "Crosshair" Holster. It rides high and out of the way, still easy to get to. What you are talking about is an easy carry with the right holster and belt.

I have several 3 inch N-frames and although the holster I use is a OWB it carries high and tight so with a cover garment it can serve as concealment. Since I open carry most of the time I have be mindful of my shirts and jackets.

Only on rare days. Sometimes in the cold of winter I'll sub a Model 25 Mountain Gun OWB for my Combat Commander. I need a heavy cover garment to feel comfortable.

I carry a 6.5" 610 revolver in an OWB leather Bianchi holster, and it conceals rather well with a trench coat. About an inch of the holster is visible peeking out beneath a standard length leather jacket or loose concealment garment, though. Had to choose between the 4" and 6.5", and I'll put up with the extra concealment hassle for the added sight radius. :)

Oh and if you ever wanted to make a polymer pistol feel weightless on your side, carry an N-frame for a few months, then strap on the fantastic plastic. You'll forget it's there as soon as you take your hand off it, nothing short of magic. :D

Yes. I have carried a S&W M624 4" and a M24 3" in an appendix carry under a sweatshirt. No problems.

I carried a S&W 325 TRD (4") all day today with very little over it in a Milt Sparks SS2. When I got this gun, I thought I'd carry it occasionally under some floppy stuff. Now, I'll carry it regularly as an alternate of my 3" 1911. I'm a big guy but with the right belt and holster, an N-Frame can be carried every day.

I have at times carried a 3.5" or 4" 357 Magnum N frame.

I would find a gun this heavy too much for concealed holster wear.

When I have done this I was using a shoulder bag to pack the revolver.

I carry a Ruger New Vaquero in a Simply Rugged Sourdough. I don't know exactly how it compares to an N frame, but it sure isn't a pocket gun. I can make it completely disappear underneath a coat.

Depends on the leather, and how much weight you're willing to carry. Here's a couple of 3" N-frames, one in a Sparks VM2, the other an Andrews McDanielII. Very easy to conceal and carry, but the weight is a little much, for me at least.

I regularly carry a 325PD and 625-10, both of which are about 24oz and a pleasure to carry. Here's the 325 in that McDanielII.

I was conceal-carrying my 4" barreled X-frame the other day under my coat as I was on my way to hunt with it.

As I've posted here several times before, one of my favorite carry concealed guns is a six inch S&W M-29-3 loaded with Speer (short barrel) 200 grain .44 Mag. JHPs. I carry it anytime my manner of dress permits a cover garment. In a Bianchi X-15 Shoulder Holster the big gun conceals well and rides comfortably. Under a suit or sport jacket it disappears. As other posters have pointed out, short leather or jean jackets tend to leave an inch or two of the bottom of the shoulder holster exposed. This is more the design of the holster (Where it attaches to the belt) than the length of the barrel. I dress to completely conceal. Three speed loaders and an LCP or J Frame snub for back-up and I'm good to go.

Respectfully,

It's winter time

I've been CC'ing my 5" PreWar 38/44 :)

I just got this one. Someone did a terrible job reblueing it, uneven polishing and not going in the correct directions for a Smith:rolleyes: I wish these people would figure out how to R&R rebound slide studs and frame lugs one of these days!
Anyway, I bought it as a shooter, missing grips. So I mechanically rebuilt it: Refaced the yoke and added a shim; fit a replacement trigger to it; Recheckered the ground hammer; Fit and installed an oversize cylinder stop; And added the 80s vintage N frame targets. I ended up with .008" gap and perfect lock up.

She's ugly as hell, but hey+:neener:

I'm able to mexican carry my 3" Model 27 when I'm walking/working around my place, but I haven't tried it out in public.

I was surprised that it carries as well as it does when just stuck into my pants. I don't own a holster for it other than the one I use for open carry of my 5" 629, again mostly just around my place and when I'm using one of my tractors.
