Does anyone here have a chopped Redhawk in .44?

Anyone here have a Ruger Redhawk in .44 mag with a chopped barrel? If so, who did the work? Any accuracy problems? But most of all, what I would really like to know is how much a Redhawk in .44 mag weighs with a 4" barrel.

You have asked a interesting question. I have alyways wanted a Ruger Redhawk but thought a three inch barrel would be about perfect for home protection and concealed carry. The only reason that I have not purchaced one is the fact that they are available only in these long club legnths. S &W calls theirs a short 44 a Mountain gun and I would love to buy one that said RUGER on it's side.

I think Hamilton Bowen and maybe also John Linebaugh offer a chopped down 4 inch Redhawk. I think Bowen calls his an Alpine Special or something like that. Chop the barrel to 4 inches, gently round the butt, trigger work, etc. Expensive but nice. I've only seen pictures. I think they will work on your gun or you can buy the whole enchilada from them.

Bowen does amazing work (I have a Redhawk he converted to a five shot .45 Colt). The basic Alpine model is not really all that expensive.

Why not just buy a 4" Dan Wesson in 44? It is as strong as the Redhawk and much more accurate, plus you get the verstility of adding longer barrels for hunting if you like. I will be glad to weigh my 4" Dan Wesson if that would give you some ball park figure that may be helpful. The good thing about S&W 44's is that they are light and easy to carry. The bad thing about S&W, is that they are light and can't stand up to a steady diet of heavy loads. I am like you guys, I prefer something a little heavier than the S&W, but I do like a 4" barrel for ease of carry and the speed of bringing the gun to target. Firing heavy loads is also MUCH more controlable in a 4" Dan Wesson that a 4" Smith. Don't get me wrong. I like Rugers and Smiths and I own guns from both these makers, but for accuracy, verstility, strength and cost you just can't beat Dan Wesson. Used Dan Wesson 44's are available on the internet gun auction sites for around $300 in excellent condition (the new ones are a little pricey).

The 44 Mag Dan Wesson with 4" vent heavy (full underlug) barrel and Hogue finger grips is 3lbs 1.75ozs. The regular vent barrel would probably be 3 or 4 ozs lighter and the wood finger grips would probably be an ounce or so lighter. When I am shooting full house 44 mag loads in a 4" barrel, I appreciate all the weight I can carry. I have carried the 6" barreled gun all day in the mountains of AZ in addition to my deer rifle. I can't say I did not know it was there, but I have carried it all day even though I was also carrying a daypack, 2 quarts of water, and I had to sling the rifle over my back and use both hands to climb out of some canyons that day. I even head shot a cotton tail at about 25 yards with the 44 for the camp pot on my way out one evening. I would much prefer a 4" to carry as a backup gun, but I didn't have a 4" barrel at the time. I hope this is helpful.
