Elk stag horn grips specifically, but working with stag the material in general.
I have some pretty old stag grips for the 1911 pistol. I know that they once fit very well on a Colt pistol that was in my family for many years but they were removed and the pistol sold a few years back. It wasn't me, but I now have the grips.
So, I have a beautiful Colt nickel plated 1911, a 1960's pistol that still looks like new. These old stag grips would enhance that pistol mightily, in my opinion, but for some reason they've lengthened slightly.
I mean they will go over the grip bushings, pretty tight but they go and they won't quite sit down all the way onto the frame. There's a small gap at the back side of each grip, maybe .030", and I think that the material has grown slightly maybe from absorbing moisture, or something.
Is there anyone here who works with stag enough to know about it's dimensional stability - does it shrink and grow in various conditions?
Educate me.
I don't want to screw up either the grips or especially the pistol..
