Does anyone in the NYPD get to have Non-Glock carry weapons?

I swear this is mentioned in the Glock book, but I need to look it over, but does anyone know if any NYPD officer can carry a different carry weapon? I keep seeing one cop in NY Penn Station with a weapon with silver/metallic slide and isn't a Glock. I keep meaning to ask him (though seeing him is somewhat random and funny enough only the silver standout from the blue uniform catches my attention) what it is. Does anyone here have any idea what it might be?

The Issue duty side arms for the NYPD are the GLOCK 19, Smith 5946, and the Sig p226 DAO.

Of the three, the S&W 5946 is the only stainless steel shiny one.

I remember several years ago when they decided to drop the revolvers, there were 3 different handguns the officers could chose. One of course was a Glock model 19 if I remember correctly. One was a third gen. Smith & Wesson double action only, 5946 maybe and I think one was a Sig 228 or 229.

Maybe its a 3rd generation Smith you see in his holster...

Thanks, I was able to come across that after a little searching. It must be the Smith and Wesson.

Interestingly I found out that certain cops may still be grandfathered in with revolvers (if they wanted them).

yes, if it was silver it was the S&W. I pulled the trigger on one of those and was surprised at how heavy and horrible they make that trigger. It felt like 16 lbs and the pull length felt like it took five minutes to get it to go bang

I'm not a particularly big fan of the 3rd Gen Smiths overall, but I always thought the triggers were excellent. DA and SA.

NY tends to set their trigger pulls to be heavier, at least on the Glocks.

The above models are correct. As mentioned NYPD sets the triggers heavier than standard hence the Glock NY trigger springs. A friend carries the 226 DAO and I don't know the exact weight but it is is heavier than the DA pull on his personally purchased DA/SA 226.

NY does force Glocks to use a horrendous trigger pull. I expect them to do the same with anything else.

The single-action in my CZ may be better, but I liked the DA in my old 469 more. I expect you could hit up Wolff springs for a kit to make the trigger on any 3rd-gen S&W unimaginably better.

The last I knew (and this was ~10 years ago), NYPD officers purchase their own sidearms, from an "approved list." The choices were the Glock 19, S&W 5946 and DAO SIG P226. The Glock, probably due to cost, is by far the most popular.

There are probably a few old guys (detectives, most likely) that still have S&W Model 10's, just because that was on the approved list way back when, and they like them.
