Does anyone make a heavy .45LC load...

edit- hey, waitaminute! You said self-defense loads. You mean against people? Are they wearing body armor, or do they just grow them really, REALLY "big 'n tall" where you are?

Well, here's something to think about.

A 300 gr @ 1100 fps raises eyebrows.
Yet, an ~ 437 gr @ ~ 1600 fps is common fodder in police hands!

I load and shoot thousands of .45 Colt. I have a moderate load and a hot load. My hot load is a level case full of 3F black powder. I've not chronographed it, but it's about as warm as I want to shoot from my Colt SAAs.

Of course, one has to enjoy the clean-up or black powder isn't as much fun.

Hal,

That's true enough. However, that extra weight and speed are accompanied by a 53% increase in frontal area and a stock. I DO think it penetrates too much for all but very careful use, though.

I recently took a big buck (10 point, about 180 lbs) with a reduced recoil slug at 1200 fps. Penetration at 15 yards was broadside, at a slight angle. All the way through, about 16"...

For Consideration...

300 grn SWC or HP
Range Velocity Impact Drop ToF Energy
0 ..... 900 ..... -0.5 ..... 0 ..... 0 ..... 540
30..... 879 .... -0.23 .... 2.17 .... 0.1 ..... 515
60 ..... 859 .... -4.03 .... 8.41 .... 0.21 ..... 492

Pretty respectable, while still controllable.

260 grn
0 ..... 1050 ..... -0.5 ..... 0 ..... 0 ..... 637
30 ..... 1006 .... -0.15 ... 1.64 ... 0.09 ..... 584
60 ..... 970 ..... -2.9 ..... 6.38 ... 0.18 ..... 543

With a 25 yard sight in, either load will still have less than 6" of drop at 50 yards.

Now, for me, these would be general purpose WoodsWalker rounds. I would be hesitant to use them defensively in any urban environment, without doing some penetration testing in water.

Holy cow!

I'm interested in subsonic (but powerful) self defense loads for a Ruger Blackhawk .45. I'm thinking 300gr. or more @ 1100 fps out of a 5.5" barrel.

You gonna leave anything for the coroner to identify afterwards? :what:

.45 L.C.

I'm with G. Glock,There's nothing like the BOOOMMM of a charge of the Dark Stuff I shoot all Black in Main Match Cowboy, but I only load 37grs. in My .45 Rugers. A full case W/ a 250gr.Lead Flat Nosed is probably a compressed 40-42grs. to fast for CAS. Shooting Black powder You'd have the advantage of being obscured from Your attacker's vision, and if You can move around the cloud You might get a second shot, undetected. I once had to shot a stage scenerio from inside a small Stagecoach. After the first shot I had to wave my hat around a couple minutes before I could find the window again! S.R.
