I just bought a couple of Bulgarian Makarovs (haven't got them from my FFL yet, can't wait to shoot them). Does anyone use them as their Concealed carry gun? And if so, what is your prefered ammunition that you use for this task? I have seen that Georgia Arms loads the 9x18 with the Gold Dot bullet, any shot this round? Or should one stick to FMJ rounds with these guns?

Mak CC Gun

I've carried the Mak when I needed to carry something smaller than a 1911. 95 gr. bullets just don't have the stopping power of the .45. Mine has however been totally reliable without any type of malfunction in about 3,000 rounds. I've only used round nose ammo.

I used to carry my Mak and I loaded it up with either Barnaul or PSGrand FMJ. I figured the lighter caliber could use the penetration, and isn't as likely to overpenetrate as 9x19 (and there are many debates raging as to whether or not .380 and 9x18 will expand reliably ... in retrospect I imagine JHPs would be fine).

Go to www.dansammo.com and check out the Barnaul JHP (and the PSGrand stuff is excellent ... brass cased if you wanna reload).

Much of the American made 9x18 ammo tends to be loaded at the same power as .380, which really falls short of the potential of the Mak ... the Eastern European stuff tends to be loaded hotter.

I used to carry Hornady JHPs but since the velocity on them is as low as most .380, and the price is up there with good .40 and .45 defense ammo, I decided to stick with the ComBlok ammo.

Oh, and for a holster, go here http://www.hbeleatherworks.com/

That's Eric Larsen's site (known as PCRCCW here on THR). He makes a nice holster.

Many will consider the Makarov round itself "not at the top of their list" for a defensive round. But I never felt undergunned with my Mak as a CCW.
A good pocket holster would hide the little thing stocked with Barnaul JHP's and a couple of extra mags.........
The guns reliability and quality make it a worthy carry and if you get good with it......then carry it. It is not a 40 or 45 although.

Shoot well.

I seriously considered carrying mine since it is very reliable and accurate, but when I laid my Mak and Colt CCO next to each other, I realized that they are darn near the same size, same thickness, and I think the CCO is even a tad lighter. I decided since there would be no benefit to carrying the Mak for primary a CCW, I'm sticking with the compact 1911 and 45ACP hollowpoints.

Occasionally I do carry the Mak in the car as a backup though. In that case, I use FMJ. It doesn't seem to me like the HPs in 9x18 have quite enough "umph" to penetrate deeply enough since Cor-Bon dropped the caliber. 9x18 HPs might be adequite for t-shirt weather though.

I carry my Mak, and have no plans to replace it.

My ammo is homemade. I use 95 gr Hornady XTPs and bullseye powder, velocity is about 1050 FPS (about 100 FPS faster than factory hornady ammo).

My Mak has been very reliable. Only problems I ever had with it were due to my handloads, but that was some time ago (I was making my ammo too short). I know that I can depend on my Mak, and that is why I carry it.

On a side note, if you are going to use hotter loads in your Maks, you might want to consider getting a new wolf recoil spring. I did, and now my brass only flys 10 or 15 yards (before it went into orbit)...

Oh, and one last thing, avoid the "thumbrest" grips, they suck (or at least I think so). I think the regular "Star" grips are best for the Mak. There are rubber grips out there, but they make the Mak too fat...

When I carry it's either my Bulgie Mak or my S&W Model 640 in .38 Special.

When carrying the Makarov, I load it with Barnaul 95 grain FMJ. Although I do want to try out the Barnaul JHPs, with the 9x18 round you're probably better off with the FMJ for penetration. Maybe.

No matter what I am carrying, a Mak is always along; sometimes Mak alone. They are tough as nails, reliable as any pistol I have ever seen, and very very accurate. All three of mine shoot hollowpoints just fine; and I use Silver Bear (Russian) 115g hollowpoints at 1025 fps. This round is an exceptionally good penetrator. As an impromptu test, I filled two one galloin milk jugs with jello, and let it set up in the fridge. (sorry, no ballistic gelatin on the farm). I set up a piece of 1/2 inch plywood between the jugs. Can't really tell you very much since the round went through it all. Second milk jug looked just as bad as another set I shot with a 9mm. I have been looking at it from a slightly different point of view. Any weapon of decent power will do the job. After a shooting, your pistol will be confiscated as evidence. Even if ruled justifiable, depending on your jurisdiction, you may well never see that piece again. I'd be pretty heartbroken if some damn fool judge destroyed my 1911, BHP, P7, Sig, etc "for the good of society"; I wouldn't be happy if they destroyed my Mak; I'd just go buy three more though.

I carry my MAK sometimes. It has been 100% reliable and those Barnaul Hollow Points are actually some good self defense ammo. I would never feel undergunned with a Mak.
The downside is the sight picture. The sights are small, there are other sight options I might have done in the future.

Mak CCW

My Bularian military surplus Mak is currently the only pistol I own. I have put over 1,000 rounds of LVE "Brown Bear" 115 grn. JHPs through it w/o a single failure. I like the extra mass of the BBs compared to the average round available in this caliber, and they make about 1,025 fps according to several tests.

My makarov is my only modern pistol and my carry gun
it is very reliable but heavy compared to more modern guns but once you appreciate the design its almost elegant in its simplicity and functionality
i love mine
i carry barnaul 95 gr HP (less than 5 bones a box at sportsmans guide) and use a Falco IWB from makarov.com
