In going over and filling out the application to purchase a CMP M1 Garand I noticed that no where in the documentation does it ask for a copy of an FFL. Certainly the M1 Garand is still considered a modern firearm, thus requiring it to be shipped to my FFL, yes?

I'll call the CMP folks in Alabama, but want to get some feedback here as well.

Yeah, that's the beauty of the CMP - its exempt from the FFL, per its congressional mandate.

FFLs, including C&Rs, do however cover one of the requirements to become a member.

Do you guys who have bought from the CMP get decent guns? I've been to their site and it looks like a lot of money for the kind of guns they seem to be describing.

Check out similar guns on the open market and I expect you'll find CMP guns to be bargains.

M1's have new wood and metal. Carbines are all original GI parts. None are matching numbers though. All Service Grade.

I'd say they are more than a decent deal.

I wouldn't mail order a field grade garand based on what I saw as their average condition at the N. store.

Every rifle I've bought from CMP has been better than advertised and cheaper than market value.

One of the last organizations left in America that supplies a valuable service, in high demand, and yet treats its customers with respect.

CMP will ship directly to your address. Keep in mind they do run the NICS background check from their end using the ID info you sent with the order. My rifles from them have been as advertised and the prices were more than fair for condition.

New wood? Certainly not the service grade H&R I received last November.
I submitted my order in March right before CMP was getting really hammered with orders. I got the guns in the early part of June. Maybe the surge in orders and guns going out left them with the Service Grade criterion needing new wood?

It has been said that it is a "worst case" gun. Not average or likely.

Besides, from what commercial source can you get a Garand for $495?

After that, will they back up their rifles like CMP will? CMP (on paper) doesn't guarantee their rifles. In reality, they do.

That has double the street value if you compare that gun to a regular dealer price for same condition. Not that anyone should be buying from CMP to turn profit!

CMP Experience

Over the past several years I have purchased 2 Garands, 2 H&R .22 targets and a Mossberg M44 .22 from the CMP. Each has met or exceeded my expectations. The Garands reminded me of those I abused and fired at ROTC summer Camp. If you remember what you used the rifle for in basic training you know what to expect. I remember on several occasions seeing M1s stacked like cordwood in the backs of duece and a half's and being issued that way and being turned in that way. Lot of dings and scrapes, but maybe not much real effect on function. Also consider how many times they were disassembled and reassembled for drill and training. When my unit received M16's to replace M14s, the M14s were transported the same way. By luck of the draw I received a CMP Springfield Armory M1 manufactured December, 1943 (I was born 12/21/1943)!!

My first CMP H&R .22 looked brand new. The second had been used very little. The Mossberg trigger guard crumbled as expected. The only disappointment I had was discovering that the sights for the H&Rs were sold separately later at about what I paid for the guns!!
