Dog attack....ALMOST

I stopped a determined dog attack (3 dogs, 2 were very aggressive and one was just along) on my own farm with a pallet and a tire iron- gladiator style. I warned the pet owners that rented a house a mile away and they laughed at me. said "nah, they don't hurt nobody." about a week later it happened again. If they ever come looking for thier dogs I'll show them where 2 of them are buried. They moved out and the landowner told me they left a toxic meth lab mess behind. For the casual walker without a firearm, a stout stick is a good option. quick to a 2 hand hold- block and jab.

wow, this is a timely thread

the same thing happened to me and my wife last week. i had my glock and stopped, faced the dog started yelling at it to stop. it did, but as we turned to go, it charged again. i yelled again until the owner came out and she said the same thing, dog never bites, blah blah blah, with the attitude that i was at fault for walking down my street.

i love dogs, but 5 ft more and dead dog

interesting thing was, with the glock, i actually was more worried for the dog than for me or my wife

irresponsible owners

It sounds to me like you know how to handle dogs: by forcefully yelling you established your dominance and sent a very strong message that s/he shouldn't fight with you.

I feel it's imperative to learn how to use your voice and body posture to try and control and de-escalate a potential dog situation. I'm a dog lover and the thought of having to put one down, even if justified, is just terrible.

I had a coy-dog my mother became attached to, started to feed it... it became agressive, and charged her one day... It got shot.

Always carry a gun if possible.

If not, carry a good knife.

Sticks are a last resort, imo.

I appreciate every ones replies. There are always a lot of opinions to think about. Unfortunately I live in Illinois and trying to explain why I was "illegally" carrying a firearm and shot a dog in town is not my cup of tea.

I really like the walking stick/cane idea. I used to carry around a 3.5" folder with the pocket clip for easy access. I lost it and went back to my 2" folder that I had on me that day. I should look into a new and bigger knife I think.

I had a run in with a dog when I was child and know to stand ground/back away slowly, don't run, yell with commanding voice.

Also I'm 6'3" and weigh 280 lbs. so I wasn't so concerned about me, I was concerned about my 14 lb. daughter.

If I was to carry a firearm with me it would have to be in a case and unloaded from a legal standpoint. This does not optimize a fast draw.

Note: Don't tell me to move, it's not a practical option.

Jaybird...Glad you were there with your family...and glad you didn't have to use the knife. Sounds like you kept your cool, and you were resolved to use what you had. Yes, your knife could have worked on the dog, despite what anyone says...it's what you had. But thank goodness you didn't have to find out. Lesson learned, I'm sure. Having said that, I'm sure you'll change tactics, and go with something more appropriate...Good luck, and be careful!

when i was about 9 years old we had an old mutt, i believe at the time he was 16 or 17, i took him for a walk around the block(well sorta more of a limp he was old ) and this big black dog came running out an started biting my dog on the back of the neck. i was yelling at the dog the go away and my dog was yelping in pain so i started kicking the strange dog in the ribs as hard as i could until it stopped and started growling at me, when it snapped i kicked it in the face as hard as i could and it just stood there like it didnt even feel it. then a owner walked out of the house and said "i just watched everything if you touch my dog again im gonna have you arrested" so i went home told my dad what happened and he went over there and asked the owner what happened, she told him just what i did, my dad said "your dog touches my dog or my son again your gonna have a dead dog"

i love dogs but when they arent trained you gotta do what you gotta do

Amen, if I dog bites me, a friend, family member, or my dog...(s)he better be trained, and fast, otherwise it will be a dead dog. I will not provoke an attack, but I won't allow myself to be attacked either. :)

Cosmo I like to lock my hands, inverted just above the wrist and try to knock them on their back, I make sure the head is trapped on one side to keep the neck and face protected. I've never had a domestic dog take more than one of them. Usually I can pet an attacking dog through verbal commands after a minute or two if he stops short. I've had a couple different incidents with our dogs when we used them at night. I've had them hit me in a building twice before in the dark. I have two old uniform trousers with holes in them. Best weapon I had then was a police radio.:)

If you walk a usual route use some the advise from this thread and confront these animals. Stiff verbal command NO!!! He will more times than not turn away from you. Sit!! If he does call him over and pet him but more so praise. Don't get to close to the face first couple times and don't get rough. Soon you have no dog problem. Ups, mail. gas & electric man, cable etc I try to introduce so there's an easier transition. These guys go up to most the dogs were talking to here with no problem. Show respect with the right aggression and most dogs just need their ears rubbed is you spend a couple minutes. You have a friend for life.

Strays and a hike not familiar I'd probably just shout NO!! If it didn't stop I'd try poking it to a stop If it came back I'd club it. I have had some try to get over the sleeve largest 90LB and it knocked me down. The trained mean ones hit you hard a riled large dog can do the same. If you have a stick try to ram the stick close to the dog while moving forward the dog will rise up some, put a knee in some meat. That's what I did to one once There were no mistakes and it went down pretty good.

Remember though all those utility men. How many of them do you here bit. Its what you do many times that counts excep da mean ones!

WOW im surprised no one has said this yet, if a dog attacks you even most trained dogs. they go for arms
1. hold your weak arm out if you know its gona attack
2. let the dog latch on your weak arm
3. a upper cut to the throat will end it

you walk away with stiches but a dog is dead

sonier, dude, what happens if you get attacked by a dog that means business and "hold your arm out" is, the dog windmills you to the ground and you are subject to god knows what.

Hopefully the supreme court will make a wise decision today, and your situation will improve.

When charged by a unknown dog, if hes barking its in warning mode. if the dogs charging and not barking, your gonna get bit !!!!!

what happens if i dont have a plan at all? if you have no weapon then i go to that, at least i know i have a chance.
your turn conwict ;) lol what would you do with no weapon?

I'd scream at the dog in as loud, high pitched shriek as possible before intentionally allowing a dog to crush tendons/ arteries, etc.. in my beloved arm.

If all else fails and I'm down to my knife or nothing. My plan is what Sonier stated. Go down to one knee and throw out my left arm as a chew toy. As the critter jumps to bite my left arm I proceed to gut it throat to tail end. Sure I'll be mauled on the arm, maybe face and probably need vaccinations, but my family is safe.:fire:

Once was enough. Walking sticks or canes just didn't seen to have the heft I wanted while walking or jogging. At a garage sale I found an old golf club (driver) and that is just the ticket. Good weight, steel shaft, and put a little rubber cup on the top end of the shaft like a cane tip. Hope I never have to try it out for real.

Defensive canes are your best bet. Someone maybe cos said bring your arms in and block. It is hard to beat a large determined dog off you. You will still need two hands and once knocked back slide one hand in and block then strike. Same technique different delivery method. You can go ahead and knife or shoot a dog but you know even if successful. The next growling figure is gonna be a man.:what: Whoever said dogs are supposed go for arms was right they are but like people dogs behaviors are similar. Some dogs even during training had to be watched for a fake for the arm then a jump at the throat. That's why the forward block.

Dogs

When I first got out of school, I worked as a real etate appraiser-tax assessor. I got got bit 6 or 7 times the first year. Mainly they were yippy little critters that went for the ankle. High boots and a swift kick usually solved the problem.

However. I went to an abandoned house one day. Two Dobermans came streaking across the field and I froze and yelled. One took my hand in his mouth and the other one nudged me. When I flinched, the one with my hand, bit down going right thru. I closed my had trapping its teeth and opened a switchblade that I always carried. I then cut the dog's throat and hold on until it expired...that seemed foreever. I still do not understand why the other did not attack also. I went to the owner and told her what happened. She called the police...they said that she would be lucky not to get sued for my medical injuries to my hand . Not a word was said about the knife except not to carry it anymore. I still have an interesting scar on my lsft hand but no permanent damage.

As a side note, we used 8 foot rulers to measure. They collapsed into a 4 foot unit for carry. I used to put the ruler under my arm when I was sketching. One day when doing so, I heard this muffled woof and the ruler was yanked from under my arm. This mutt was thrashing around with most of the ruler down his throat. I guess he had charged me from the rear and ran right up the ruler...I got the ruler out and left quietly. I guess that the dog died..

i quit the job after I got snake bit and my partner got severely injured by a horse that charged him..Not worththe risk.

one thing i have learned about dogs over the years is that they only follow calm assertive energy. you have to establish you position of pack leader right away, otherwise you become a follower. if you run you become a target, remember that dogs are predators. dogs can also sense fear, and they attack fear.

if you stand your ground, be prepared if the dog doesnt stop, but if you run you WILL be attacked. as stated most dogs will false charge to see if you run, bears do the same thing. i have a cane that is made of aluminum, with a nice heavy plastic knob that is attached to a hidden 13" blade. this can be quite useful in a dog attack if needed.

but if you stand your ground and are assertive, not yelling but forceful, the dog will back down just about everytime.

walking stick?! bleh im too manly to carry a walking stick ill do it with my bare hands. joking, walking stick is a great idea, i read a article bout a guy defending against a cougar that way. i dont carry a walking stick. If i dont feel like carrying my BP revolver, i carry a razor sharp hand axe on my belt. its not a crazy sight around here in my small town. Especially everyone knows that i work mainly in logging :)
