DOJ Turns Over 64,000 Fast and Furious Documents

Department of Justice turns over 64,280 pages that was withheld from Congress, the documents are better known as a "Vaughn Index". Two-Thirds of the documents were out of the scope of executive privilege.

"When Eric Holder wants to know why he was the first Attorney General held in criminal contempt of Congress, he can read the judge’s order that compelled the production of 64,280 pages that he and President Obama illegitimately and illegally withheld from Congress. Since these pages still do not represent the entire universe of the documents the House of Representatives is seeking related to the Justice Department’s cover-up of the botched gun-walking scandal that contributed to the death of a Border Patrol agent, our court case will continue,"

Surprise, surprise, surprise...

1) I don't suppose there's a penalty of any kind for abusing Executive Privilege
2) I don't suppose there's a penalty for overstaying a court order by three days in order to get past an election, especially when the initial date was chosen after specifically denying the request for a shortly post-election release date

We can only hope Obama/etc. continue to inappropriately redact these documents, since even friendly courts and a compliant congress will tire and eventually demand the whole mess be made public. The administration needs to be treated as hostile to this investigation, and these disclosure decisions taken out of their hands.

All that is necessary is for Congress to exercise Article I, Section 8, Clause 15, with instructions to seize the documents necessary. If Obama won't sign the legislation, Congress can override his veto.

Done.

I think the various tactics used by our government to delay, obstruct, and just not co-operate at all with attempts to dig into their various scandals (lord only knows what they'll do next....) have pretty much backfired on them. I believe that yesterday's election results pretty clearly show that the general public sees right through them. If asked I would strongly recommend that those involved that run in the next election (that small affair in 2016...) be clearly labeled for whatever part they had in concealing important info from the general public if they insist on running for office. We'll start with "Fast & Furious" Holder, then it's "Benghazi" Clinton, etc.

Attempts to conceal activities that are anti-gun or just plain incompetent need to be brought to light whenever they occur. And if authorities attempt to cover up what they've been doing then that should all that's needed to encourage all of us to persist until the truth does come out.

I'm just amazed that at least 64,000 separate documents were generated covering a covert operation...

atf.gov claims the agency only has 4,700 full-time employees. With all those documents, memoranda, and email they're generating, it's a wonder they have time for such shenanigans.

After the 2012 election Issa promptly dropped the matter of Fast and Furious. The lawyers have fussed over it since.

Issa is term limited as Chairman of the House Oversight Committee and will leave early next year.

A quiet late week "document dump". A common tactic used, hoping that the media outlets won't notice and will move on to the next topic. They needn't have worried. The media is NOT interested in anything that makes obama look bad.

There must be something juicy in there if they thought they needed to use the tremendous drubbing they took on Tuesday as cover for it...

The real info is in docs the President has hidden under "executive privilege". This administration broke Federal law, the Gun Control Act of 1968, by forcing law abiding Americans in border states to register multiple purchases. They must have thought a lot about this anti-gun scheme, and now there is precedent to register firearms. Obviously, we must roll this back by electing the right candidate in 2016.

Not according to the federal appeals court:

Judge Karen LeCraft Henderson, writing for the three-judge appeals panel, said the agency was within its legal authority when it issued the demand letter. She said that that the Gun Control Act of 1968 "unambiguously authorizes the demand letter." Henderson, who was appointed by Republican President George H.W. Bush, was joined by Judges Judith W. Rogers, an appointee of Democratic President Bill Clinton, and Harry T. Edwards, an appointee of Democratic President Jimmy Carter.

Congress annually passes legislation banning the ATF from establishing a national firearms registry, but Henderson rejected arguments from the challengers that the requirement unlawfully created one.

Because ATF sent the demand letter to only 7 percent of federally licensed gun dealers and required information on only a small number of transactions, "the July 2011 demand letter does not come close to creating a `national firearms registry'," she wrote.

Show me where any US administration ever repealed a BATFE ruling put in place during a previous administration. Unless i'm badly mistaken, it would require an act of congress to change this BATFE ruling.
